MG TD TF 1500 - STEEL WHEELS wider

I have tried to search for this, but I just can't find the info,,,,
A while back there was a picture posted from either a New Zealand or an Australian MG Event that showed a TD (blue??) that had 1" added to the width of the steel wheels. Does any one remember that event or car ??

Thanks,

Steve I have to agree with the Moss discussion comments. Stockton Wheel does great work. I have had wheels done there although not MG. A friend who was building a Pro-Street '57 Safari wagon (Pontiac Nomad) had a set made modifying a set of Pontiac 8 lug wheels Fronts were narrowed to 15x4.5 and the rears widened to 15x15. powder coating was done well and the car looked awesome. Definitely worth a call though you might find a similar shop closer to you

Cheers

Just FWIW:
MG offered slightly wider wheels as an option on the TD. These have part number 131904 and enable the use of 6.00" X 15" Dunlop Fort tyres instead of the standard 5.50" X 15".
Interesting thing is that 131904 is the standard road wheel for both the Wolseley 6/80 and Morris Six MS and don't have ventilation holes....
I wonder how many TD's were ordered with this option ?
Just my 2 cts...

Steve, the picture below, also taken and submitted by Matthew, may well be the one you refer to. I had the original centres punched out and new modern rims welded in. Benefits include: improved handling, greater choice of tyre, safety rim to run tubeless tyres with confidence.

I widened my TF wheels about an inch to take 185/15 tyres in 1972, before selling it in 1974. When I re-bought the car in 2001 they had been replaced by originals (thanks, Rod). It handled very well on the 185's.

Hi Guys,

What width were the standard, original TD wheels? Were they 4"? I know the "Special" wheels offered by the factory, were 4.5".

Just in case anyone is interested, I have attached an image of the front cover and page 17 of the MG "Special Tuning" Literature which shows the special wheels as "M.G. Part No. 131904" as Nick said.

MATT, ROB, DAVE,
yup,, that's the one,, It really looks good!,, I had to replace my tires a few weeks ago, and I am now (again) battling with the typical "Bent" TD wheel 50+mph shimmy, due to the center of the wheel getting 'warped".
I'm not really sure how to fix this problem, I don't want to switch to wires, and I'm on the other side of the earth from Stockton.
It seems like the center section of the wheel is the weak link and it would probably happen again when I get a tire changed.
Did you experience this wheel shimmy before they were made wider??

I have 10" wide wheels on my custom pickup. Reason I'm mentioning this is, if the center line of the wheel moves to the inside to keep the same turning radius without the tires hitting the inter panels, The vehicle will want to dodge right or left when hitting a puddle of water during or after a rain. I've put up with this since I bought the truck new. Just be aware of this scenario as it can put you in a very bad situation if you are not ready for it. My advice is when having wider wheels made have the manufacture keep the center line in the proper position. The steering geometry will change if you don't, I guarantee it. PJ

Is the TD Special Tuning book available on line (free)? I have the factory Special Tuning books for TB-TC, TF, MGA, and midgets. Trying to round out the library for our MG Club.

Thanks,

There must be some one out there who has dealt with this "bent" problem and solved it,, where do race car TD's have their wheels made ?? They change tires frequently,, so I would imagine they have the same problem???

Steve,
Take them to a place that specializes in MAG wheel or wheel repair. Found one in Maryland close to Baltimore when I lived in the that area. Had all my wheels straightened for a TD which really improved the ride. These wheels are very easily distorted and bent. Went through 6 wheels till I was able to get 4 good ones. Good luck but it can be solved in most cases...

Steve: Like Bill Chasser, Jr. said Stockton Wheel in Stockton, CA, USA does all types of wheel repair and rebuilding wheels. I had them straighten my rear wheels on my '53 Singer 4AD, solid 16" wheels, great job.

I have no financial interest in the above mentioned company, just sharing my experience.

Hi Lonnie,

I don't know about being available on-line but I do have some "hard copy" books. My brother and I came across good copies of the TC and TD books and had multiple copies done. If it is for an MG club I reckon I should send you one. I will email the details.

What was the width of the standard original TD rims? I know the special wheels (Part No. 131904) were 4.5".
