MG TD TF 1500 - steering colum felt
Good morning gent's . I just received those felts from M.M And have to say a bargain ( ahem ) anyway I suspected they were some special felts but, no.. do I have to treat those felts with some lubricant before I put them place? Or just mount them dry ! Thanks for your time, Gerard |

Soak them in motor oil for 24 hrs before installing. |

I think I remember something about graphite grease in one of the manuals... I used a combination of moly grease and graphite powder. Jim |

Gerard, It will be very helpful for you to go to MGAguru.com for an excellent article on installing the felt, including a heads-up on one of them being too thick. I did the installation at the beginning of the summer and it is a very worthwhile improvement. Bobby L. (I got your name right this time) |

Hi Bobby ( and others ) thanks for the info. Most helpful. Gerard |

A better bearing is a strip of teflon or delrin. I have teflon as the top packing of the steering column on our TD. Cheers - Dave |

I soaked thick felt in oil, then squished it in a vise, then installed before it thickened up again...seemed to work.... |

Hi all, I'm old enough to remember inserting a strip of thin (British type) cigarette packet cardboard into a worn felt years ago, to satisfy the examiner of a forthcoming annual MOT test. They seemed keen on such things then, although in reality the steering column was going nowhere, even wth slight side play in the tube! Happy days! Cheers, John |

The current TF1250, and the TF1500 I am restoring have Teflon(or similar) fitted to both the upper and lower column with success. John,I am not a smoker, however it seems there is an ingenious use for the packets at least!! Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Hi Rob, I wasn't a smoker back in the 1970s or now, but cigarette packets were found everywhere, eg office waste bins!, and were a ready source for small pieces of thin card and aluminium foil! Cheers, John |

Any easy source for the Teflon strips? TIA Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Tom, Some years ago a TF friend here in WA had a set of Teflon split bushes turned up for his TF1500 by a lathe man. A couple of sets were additionally made up and I was lucky enough to procure them.I don't know of any of the usual MG suppliers who have them in stock. Cheers Rob Grantham |

I think there is a piece of leather belt in my steering column. Like the teflon idea. |

....a strip of cigarette cardboard is perfect for drawing through both your distributor points and fuel pump points....cleans them right up after you have given them a touch with emery paper.... (seems to me you could use it to set your points as well) |

Hi Gordon, Yes I used to do the same - we're showing our age methinks! Cheers, John |
