MG TD TF 1500 - Steering rack maintenance
4 new tyres on the TD today, but the fellow doing the install tells me that the steering box is a bit sloppy. Any, advice on how to tell if there is too much play in the steering? As a quick test I found that I can move the steering wheel less than 1/4 inch before the tyres twitch a bit. To me that doesn't seem too bad - or as usual am I missing something here? .... Chris |

Hi Chris, I would jack up the front wheel, grasp it at the 3 & 9 o'clock.... push and pull and see if there is any slop in the connections. That is probably where the Tire Installer noticed movement. There should be very little...if any. You have Outer Tie Rod Ends, Inner Tie Rod ends, Rack & Pinion, and Wheel Bearings...all which can contribute to excessive movement. Outer Tie Rod Ends are replaced. The Inner( under the Rubber Gaiters) can be possibly adjusted with Shims. The Rack has some adjustment available with Shims. Wheel Bearings would be replaced. It would help if you could have an Assistant to perform the Push-Pull movement, while you looked and felt for movement and sloppy connections. Good Luck! Mike |

Thanks for that Mike. Clear and straightforward. I'll have a play over the next few days. .... Chris |
