MG TD TF 1500 - Steering Reassemblly
I am ready to reassemble my steering column, telescopic extension and steering wheel. There are keyways and slots on the parts, which means that correct alignment of the parts is necessary to achieve a centered steering wheel. The Workshop Manual does not describe how to accomplish this. Can someone provide guidance? |

corey, are you asking about getting the steering wheel centered after you assemble the upper steering column with the steering wheel or are you asking how to put together the upper steering column assembly including the steering wheel? as you may know, they are two different operations. surprised dave braun did not have pics on his site covering steering column. regards, tom |

Tom, to be more specific, the lower (main) steering column is slotted at it's upper end. There are three possible positions it can be installed on the stub shaft coming from the steering box (i.e., at the flexible connection). How do I determine which of the three is correct? |

Use the steeringwheel to orient the collum. If need be you can tweak to center using the tie rod adjustment -David |

Ahhh..now I see. Eyeball the front wheel alignment, set the teeming wheel so the MG crest is upright and you are set. As David says, if the pinion is engaging the rack at the proper location you can tweak the steering wheel alignment with minor adjustments to the tie rod ends after you set the toe in to nil. I just looked up Moss' price for the upper and lower felt bushes. Twenty bucks for two small pieces of felt. Can someone suggest a source of the felt material to allow me to fabricate the bushes? |

You have to get things centered pretty closely before you connect the flex coupling i.e. rack centered, wheels pointed straight ahead and steering wheel at 12 o'clock. The adjustment you can get out of the tie rods is not enough to correct the 120 degrees of being off by one hole. Ask me how I know (PO of course!) Chuck PS if you have threads in the lower piece make sure the bolt shoulder is firmly seated against it before tightening the lock nuts. Its hard to turn the standard nuts because the points of the hex nut jam against the casting. You can probably modify the nuts to make it work. My threads were stripped out so I could hold the nut and tighten the bolts from the head up top. I'm the one who lost 2 of the three bolts while driving the car, PRETTY SCARY! chuck s |
