MG TD TF 1500 - Steering Wheel Interferes w/ Starter Switch? - RHD
I've got a RHD '52 TD and where the starter switch is, the steering wheel is in the way. I don't know if the switch is in the same relative location for LHD cars (my switch is way right with only the two warning lights to its right). For now it's not an issue since the PO of the car replaced the pull switch w/ a push 'button', but I'm gradually getting the parts in line to convert it back to the correct pull switch, and I'm wondering how I'm going to pull it since it's directly underneath the rim of the wheel. I know I can telescope the wheel to make it a little easier, but it still seems odd to have it like this. The original service manual shows it in this position for RHD cars. Maybe someone can alleviate my concerns, is it less of an issue than it seems like it might end up being. |

The owners manuals are correct for RHD cars. Do you have the steering wheel into the dash as close as you can? You know you can bring it out. Thats what the flexible steel band is for, covering the expanded distance. BTW the starter knob only needs to come out about an inch if everything is tight. Chris |

The adjustment on mine is currently so loose that I can actually move it at will. Maybe I should find a decent distance and just stick w/ it. Glad to hear I'm not going to need a lot of travel. Is the switch under the wheel rim for LHD's also? |

Stan, it sounds like all is normal. The pull swicth is located just under the wheel which makes it very handy to slip your index and middle finger around the starter knob while hooking your thumb around the steering wheel. As was pointed out, the knob only moves about half an inch, if that. If you have the original starter switch, you will see that the center shaft only needs to move a slight amount. |

I just got a 'old' switch and see what you mean. Question - Where is the starter cable routed? Through what hole in the firewall? The bracket, switch, cable, everything was removed to install the current push-button arrangement, so I need it all, plus advice on how to get it back the right way. Any chance anyone can send a photo of the bracket and switch and where they are located on the firewall? |

This diagram will tell you where the cable and bracket go: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_firewall.htm Don't really have pictures of the starter switch. Always blocked by the horn. See slide 13. You can just see the cable connector to the starter above the back of the horn and where the cable comes through the firewall. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_gallery_my_mgtd.htm If you poke around the site you may catch some views in brochures etc. You can also get a maintenace manual which I think has a drawing.
