MG TD TF 1500 - steering wheel orientation
Hello, After removing the steering wheel and steering column, , I cannot find the original position now, which was correct. It can be adjusted at the steering rack input shaft or at the upper end of the steering column, just removing the wheel. But it seems to be a combination of both to retrieve the former position. Before removing once more, can somebody tell me how many splines are there on these shafts ? Laurent. |

You have limited to zero adjustment at the wheel as there is a key and key way at the top end. Regards, tom |

Laurent, 48 splines which equates to 7.5°/spline. Regards Declan |

Don’t forget that at the end of the steering column is a flex yoke. This can be assembled in 3 different ways. Jim B. |

Thank you all. Yes I know. maybe just 1 or 2 spines at the wheel. Tim : removed, not adjusted that's why I know the right combination exists Good information from Declan but 48 splines is for wheel or steering rack shaft ? I guess these are different. Laurent. |

The steering wheel is keyed ... no splines. Unless you pulled the telescopic portion and left it’s key out there is also no left or right adjustment available. Major alignments are at the rack flange ie 120° to the left or 120° to the right. There are stamped witness marks on both halves to get that correct on the assembly line If you are out by a small amount then make your adjustments at the tie rod ends by an equal amount of turns respectively Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

The 48 splines are on the pinion shaft. The wheel is as Bill stated above-keyed so no adjustment. https://abingdonspares.com/products/pinion-flange Brown & Gammons have introduced a new steering wheel boss to overcome this problem with aftermarket steering wheels. 4 keys ways all at different offsets and 27 holes on the outside so this gives you 108 different mounting points This allows adjustment in increments of 3.3°. https://www.ukmgparts.com/product/td-td1-new-product-lines/steering-wheel-boss-td-tf-mlb8bg Regards Declan |

On factory steering wheels, even if you leave the key out there still is no adjustment at the wheel. The splines are not continuous around the steering column. There is a space where no splines are machined. (Either in the wheel hub or steering column shaft..or both, I cannot remember) Regards, Tom |

As said above, if more than a minor error, almost certainly mialignment at the steering column flexible joint / yoke, which is where it should be corrected. Dave H |

Aren't we discovering an MG evolution. My TD is one the last from 53. And the slot is wider than the key. It allows an adjustment span of 3 splines. See picture. Without the key, the wheel can be installed in any position. No restriction as Tom says. Quite sure my wheel is original. We already discussed about the marble material in a previous thread. I removed the wheel so I can complete Declan's information. The wheel has also 48 splines. So that adjusting the weel or the steering rack shaft is the same step. My guess was that there were different. I was wrong. Laurent. |
