MG TD TF 1500 - Steering wheel rake and rubber bushings
This is somewhat related to the 6'- 1" 221 pounds thread:
I'd like to hear people's opinions on the following: If you change the rake of the steering wheel in a TD from where it naturally settles you are effectively changing the angle at which the steering column flange and the steering rack flange meet. This would seem to me to stretch the rubber bushings between the flanges at one point in rotation and compress them at another if the two flanges are not parallel. I realize the owner's manual talks about changing the rake of the steering wheel but those instructions appear to have been dropped in later editions. Thoughts? Tim TD12524 |

I have pondered the same thing, but came to the conclusion that the potential angle of variation, and therefore compression of the rubber, is so small that it can be ignored. Dave H |

Fully agree with Dave on this one. Besides, I guess that's exactly why the rubber bushings are installed; to make small variations in angle between rack and steering shaft a possibility. Nick (TD3232) |
