MG TD TF 1500 - Steering Wheel Surprise
I took my 1955 MG TF 1500 for it's first drive in 20 years this afternoon. She runs great and everything worked (except the tach which is still eratic) Only one disappointment, my steering wheel seems to have 2 broken spokes and I didn't notice that until I was on the road. Does anyone have an extra steering wheel that would fit a TF that they would be willing to part with? I don't mind having to recondition it as long as the spokes are intact. Thanks so much for all the help I have received on this site for the past 6 months while I was working on getting my TF back on the road. You guys have been awesome! Sincerly, Dave B. |

Dave, are the breaks down at the hub end of the spokes? They can be rewelded. Bud |

Bud, Yes, the breaks are about a MM or 2 from the hub. I have a mig welder, so I'll give it a go. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the help! Dave B. |

....the spokes are stainless and the hub is cast aluminum...tricky at that end. I'm always surprised at how the stainless can break straight across at the hub...have seen quite a few this way..... |

now THAT would be a tricky welding job! regards, tom |

Let me know if you still need a wheel. I've got about a half dozen in various states of decrepitude. You might want a good core that you can send to Gordon to make you a nice wood wheel! I've also got a Moss Motors reproduction plastic wheel that I bought years ago that I have never used. My father has since made me a wood wheel, so this one is now surplus. |

David L, I haven't tackeled the welding yet, but I do have some interest in the wheels you mentioned. Could you email me pictures? Dave.w.burdette@snapon.com Sincerly, Dave B. |

Dave, I'll get some images of my rewelded spokes tomorrow and I'll post them. Bud |

Dave, here's an image of the rewelded spokes. The welder is a very clever, talented person. He cut back the aluminum centerpiece about 1/8" to expose more of the spoke section that is molded (?) into the hub. He was then able to reweld the s/s spokes. The 'missing' aluminum is virtually unnoticeable. That line on the second one is not a crack, it's sort of a sleeve. The weld is under it. Bud
