MG TD TF 1500 - Stone Guards

In a recent post on the topic, I posted the following:

"Let me see if I've got this right. The standard clips that hold the guards will work fine on the TF but not the TD. The type with the knurled knobs that attach the clips to the trim rings required holes to be drilled through the chrome trim rings to accomodate the threaded studs??? Just checking."

Can anyone with the type that have the knurled knobs tell me what drilling is required to mount the guards?

Thanks

Larry - One small hole is required on each side of the trim ring. This will allow a number 6 machine screw to be placed through the hole from the inside and held in position by a hex nut on the outside, leaving about 1/4 inch of exposed threads. The two tabs of the mesh screen are then held in place by the knurled knobs, surprisingly secure. I had this type on my TD for about fifteen years and never had one come loose. Lou

Larry,

Here's a photo of my Td with the stone guard attached. The hole has to be drilled in the trim ring and then the bolt and nut go on and the stone guard is held on by the knurled nut.

Larry,

Here's another one of the TF with the stone guard mounted there.

I'm working on a variation of the TD attachment that will look approximately like the picture of George's TD. I fabricated three tabs from sheet stainless steel for each stoneguard, which will be placed at 12 o'clock, 4 o'clock, and 8 o'clock. The tab wraps around the outer rim of the stoneguard.

My plan is to use a thumb screw with a thin nut on the underside of the tab. The tab will be secured to the chrome headlamp with a thin strip of Velcro under the tab.

To remove the stoneguard, pull away each tab with the thumb screw. If I want to permanently remove all traces of the stoneguard attachment, I can remove the Velcro from the headlamps. This avoids the need to drill any holes in my chromed headlamps.

Thanks All, exactly what I needed to know/see.

Larry: I am very interested to see how your mod works out. Keeps us posted.
