MG TD TF 1500 - Storing an XPAG Engine

Over the winter, I will be removing my XPAG engine and it will be put into storage for possibly a long period of time. Does anyone have any ideas on how to prepare it for storage. The engine is in very good shape, and I would like to have it remain that way. All ideas and thoughts greatfully accepted.

Of course, an oil change and run for a bit to circulate clean oil. Get a can of marine fogging oil - spray into carbs while running, until the plugs foul and it stops. Close off intake and exhaust openings. Store in a dry, heated place to prevent internal condensation. Get rid of fuel remaining in carbs.
I always add a can of STP when I change oil. I think that it is particularly helpfull in longterm storage because it should help to protect the cam and lifters on the next start-up.

First...make sure you drain *ALL* of the water out of the block...tilt it on end if you have to to get it out.

I'm not sure if Steven is advocating you store the block with the sump full of oil or not...(I wouldn't)...it can be messy if the engine is tipped over by accident. Just squirt some oil in each cylinder, then try to make a stand for the block that will allow you to rotate the crank occasionally (I'm assuming by long term you're indicating the time frame will be years, not months).

You might also consider removing the spark plugs and installing desiccant plugs.

George; I use rubber expansion plugs sold for freeze plug replacement for carb plugs. Provide a moisture-proof seal and never deteriorate like tape. Pic is of a simple stand for storage with easy mobility. As Gene suggests,a few turns every month or two is great insurance. Dan

Nice test stand, Dan.

Thanks,Gene. Knocked 3 together out of angle and HF casters for storing engines-this one got used for a run-in stand on my engine. Dan

Thanks everyone for their comments on preparing an XPAG engine for long term storage.

I rebuilt this engine in the fall of 1963 and it did not fire up again until the spring of 1996. I did most of the things that were mentioned in your recommendations. When the time came to get it started, it was amazing how it fired up. Just followed the usual procedure, oil pressure, gas in the carbs and away it went. No one more surprised than me, but a satisfying experience. Thanks one and all again.
