MG TD TF 1500 - SU fuel pump leak
I’m helping a friend work on her TD. It’s a MKII with two SU fuel pumps. The one on the right is leaking gas through the small vent hole in the pump body. ( # 27 in the W/S/M) I know no gas should be on this side of the diaphragm, but every 30 seconds or so a fine mist of gas is sprayed out of the breather hole(?) This just started after the carburetors were rebuilt and was not noted before. Is this a problem with the fuel pump on the right , on the left or the carburetors. What’s the fix. John |

This sounds like a dangerous situation, especially since the points are sparking like crazy in that end of the pump. There's probably not enough oxygen in there to allow ignition, but I wouldn't risk it. Disassemble the pump, and check the diaphragm for leaks. Replace if necessary. Assembly is the reverse of disassembly, as Haynes always says. |
