MG TD TF 1500 - SU Fuel Pump Question

I'm at the point of hooking up the fuel pump for the basket case 1955 TF that I recently purchased.
I bench tested the pump and it gives one click, it drawls the diaphram up but doesn't release it to be pushed back down by the return spring.
Is this normal when trying to test a pump without fuel in it?
Maybe I have to have it installed in the car and hooked upwith some fuel in the tank for it to operate properly.
It's a newer electronic pump and I'm running it with negative ground, and I believe it is not polarity sensitive.
This is my first SU fuel pump, so I'm not sure.
Can anybody help?
Thanks, David

David - If the pump is all electronic (aluminum tag at 12 o'clock on the coil housing flange with the word ELECTRONIC on it), it is definitely polarity sensitive. The pump should run fine (and very fast) without fuel going into it. What color is the tape around the junction of the coil housing and the end cover? For negative ground, it should be black (red for positive ground). If the tape is black and you hooked it up with the positive lead going to the power terminal and the ground wire going to the terminal on the flange of the coil housing, it should chatter away. If it not doing that, the pump is maladjusted and will have to be adjusted properly to get it to run. Contact me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net and I'll try to guide you through the adjustment procedure. Cheers - Dave

Thanks so much Dave.
I did send you an email.

Dave,
I'm very excited.
I'm back home from my business trip and bench tested my SU Electronic Pump using positive ground.
Guess what, it chatters away!
I guess I didn't ruin it after all.
I did send you an email as well asking if you could forward me the instructions on reversing the polarity.
I'm very gratful for your expert advise.
Thanks again,
Dave B.

Dave,
I received your email, via my wife's email, and made the negative ground conversion on my SU Pump.
Very simple using your instructions.
I bench tested and it works great!
Thanks so much for your help.
