MG TD TF 1500 - SU fuel pumps and XPEGs
Cleaning up some loose ends on my '52 TD with the XPEG engine. I've upgraded to the 1.5 inch SU's. Do I need the double fuel pump set up with the larger SU's?? The current, single fuel pump I have doesn't seem to be original. It uses two of the "Banjo" type fittings on top, both pointed straight up. This does not seem to be the standard set up. The fuel line from the gas tank has a compression type fitting on the end that I'm sure was intended to go to a different type of pump. The pump I have uses a banjo to a pipe then a rubber hose to the fuel line. Of course the rubber hose at the fuel line end is pushed over the compression bulge, then hose clamped. I'd like to get back to the right compression fitting and correct fuel pump, though I've complicated my life I suppose when I went to the larger 1.5 inch SU's to take advantage of the XPEG's larger displacement. I definitely need some guidance here. What in the heck should I be installing to make things nice?? Thanks ahead of time. |

Harry - Contact me off line and I can get your fuel pump situation straihtened out for you. Cheers - Dave |

My TF 1500 (XPEG) uses a single SU Fuel Pump as original. The TD MK II had the dual pump arrangement for high speed driving. Neither had any compression fittings in the fuel lines. Banjo's and pipe fittings (BSP) only. See for example the Moss catalog for parts. |

Harry, Single SU pump should be fine, but you would probably need the more powerful high-capacity type fitted to later TFs. This was mounted on the chassis at the tank end to push the fuel to the carbs, rather than the TD/early TF arrangement with the pump on the bulkhead to suck the fuel up to the carbs which could lead to starvation at higher demand levels. You could leave the original on the bulkhead as a "dummy", possibly taking the diaphrams out for fuel pass-through? AB |
