MG TD TF 1500 - Support for Choke Cable at Carbs
I have always had trouble getting my choke to pull easily. One of the issues seemed to be the geometry of getting the cable aimed right at the connection point of the brass carburetor linkage. Complicating that is the somewhat flimsy grasp of the sheet metal link (Moss part #370-430), where its two small jaws can loosen away from the choke cable. With my marginal metal-working skills, I made a support out of regular 3/8” copper tubing and a piece of flat brass with two 3/8” allen stop collars (about 50 cents apiece.) With the collars I hold the choke cable sheath on both ends. I have drilled a hole in the flat brass where the machine bolt goes through the original linkage. This allows it to be pivoted so as to aim the inner cable at the connecting point, and the jaws are still used to hold the tubing. This thing makes the cable support a lot more positive and adjustable. Also, it provides for a nice stop when pulling out the choke. I lubed the choke cable with Teflon spray, and shortened the cable sheath as much as I could to remove additional curves. (At one point someone had suggested teflon inner-cable sheath from a bike store, but I have been unable to find any.) I am finally satisfied with the amount of pressure needed to pull and push the choke. Hope that helps someone with a similar issue. Go Pens! Safety? Fast? Scott Ashworth – ’54 TF |

I think decades ago I drilled an additional hole in the bulkhead that permitted the cable a more horizontal run from carb levers to the bulkhead. |

Thank you Scott. The MG is a design rich rolling project. Always something new. Peter 54TF |

Here's another view of the piece. I did put a slight curve into the tubing. SRA |

I had a 77 MG midget and it was hard to pull the choke unless you pushed the gas pedal in a bit, not sure what was binding but if you did that it pulled easy. |
