MG TD TF 1500 - T Nuts for Master Cylinder Cover
The correct T nuts for the TD brake master cylinder cover can be obtained from NTG Motor services P/L in England. They are identified on their website as TA, TB, TC Seat Runners to Base FO-13 T Nut Round 2 BA. The link is http://www.mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p3822_T-Nut_Round_2_BA.html. A couple of pics of one of the original 2 BA T nuts I just removed from an original TD floorboard are attached. I have confirmed the thread size by using a brass 2 BA machine screw & I'm confident the nuts from NTG are absolutely correct. I have a box of brass 2 BA cheese head slots a couple of which I'll turn down to round heads. There is a sketch of the screws & the cover in the TD Driver's Handbook. I've emailed Chris & let him know that the screws & T nuts are indeed 2 BA. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I got the same replacement type from B&G - they are similar to, but not identical with, the originals on my TF. Dave H |

I won't be able to compare them until they arrive Dave but from what I can see the NTG offering does appear to be identical to the originals. Nice to know that they also fit the TF. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter do you know if these are needed for the seat back to tonneau bar mounting? I have come up with a couple of original bars but don't know how they were mounted. Cheers Mate!🍻 Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

I think the seat back to tonneau bar mountings don't have any fixings as such. The screws just go into the seat back (on a TF). From what I remember the new T nuts were generally thicker metal than the originals (not just down to corrosion). Dave H |

Hi Bill. Still no clue as to how either the tonneau rail or the seat adjusting bracket were fixed. I plan to use machine screws & a 6 mm brass insert. Has to be more durable than wood screws. Not that I'll be carrying passengers again in the back they way I used to in the 60's. Pretty happy with NTG. When I priced the shipping for two nuts (unit cost 1.20 GBP) at 17:50 GBP, I nearly fell over. On querying this & then suggesting that he send them via airmail at my risk Paul offered to send me the two nuts gratis. Hows that for service! Once they arrive Dave I'll use the digital vernier & post the comparison. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Here's a picture of the tonneau bar mounting, showing 1 of the 2 screws in the end bracket. I've never had it off so I don't know what they are screwed into. It's very solidly attached in any case. Joe |

Thanks Joe. They look like pan head Phillips. What is the DOM of your car? Wondering if slots were used on earlier TD's? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter - Build date of TD 23004 is 11 December 1952. Joe |

Peter, the fasteners for the tonneau bar on my 51 TD (TD12524) were screwed directly into the wood, no T nuts. From the poor condition of the seat backboard I'm assuming it was the original. The screws were phillips head. Tim TD12524 |

Thanks Joe & Tim. When I replace the seat back I'll do away with the original wood screws & use the 6 mm threaded inserts & machine screws. As most of the other fixings on my 1st Feb 1951 TD are slots I'll use pan head slots for the seat adjusters & tonneau rail. The yet to be fitted & recently refurbished rail in satin black that I purchased from SA looks great. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Pic of NTG T nuts attached. Paul sent the T nuts express post & as promised at no charge. He also included one of his catalogues. Dave the measurements of the originals & those from NTG are as follows. Original Diameter .750" NTG .750" Original Height .232" NTG .307" Original Post diameter .232" NTG .232" Original thread 2BA NTG 2BA Visually they appear identical except for the height of the threaded section which once installed is buried in the floor & is not seen. Purchase with confidence. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

They also appear to be pressed mild steel, with a brass varnish. I have item installed for the seat runners, and they work perfectly. |

Excellent. A pretty good reproduction then, which is nice to know. My finding with NTG is that they can be a little more expensive than some of the other suppliers, but quality is good. Dave H |

Hi guys. The plot thickens. When the T nuts arrived the one thing I didn't check was the thread. This prompted the following email. 'Investigations today confirm that the thread on your 2 BA T nuts is not 2 BA. It seems it is either 3/16” Model Engineers or 10 gauge UNF. I’m testing the UNF thread tomorrow with a machine screw of that size & I’ll let you know what I find. The Internet confirms just how close these three threads are. Even though the Model Engineers thread is only 0.0025” larger in diameter than 2 BA it is even more obscure than BA, so the likely candidate is 10 – 32 UNF.' I received the following reply. 'Good morning Peter I have just spoken to my nut manufacturer and you are correct - They have supplied 10-32 UNF as he tells me they are normally so close they will do the job 99% of the time. - I wish he had told me this before as I list as 2BA not 10-32 UNF! - It appears 2BA have now gone obsolete and these were offered as an alternative. Anyway to cut a long story short, I do have about 50 old stock 2ba threaded T nuts, see F010 (http://www.mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p3821_T-Nut_2_BA.html) These are 2 BA. I'll pop a couple in the post this evening to you. With Regards Paul Banyard Telephone 0044 (0)1473 406031/32 NTG Motor Services Ltd (estab 1966)' Worth noting that 2 BA will screw into the UNF T nut about 6 threads before it binds, so they really are a close thread, but 2 BA ain't 10 - 32 UNF. Apologies if I've misled anyone. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

It seems there isn't a replacement T nut to be had that is identical to the original. Just opened the link above which shows a pic of what Paul is now sending. Whilst the thread is now correct, visually it is less similar than the UNF ones he first sent. I now have three choices. Buy a round head slot in UNF, use the 2 BA T nut with the prongs or run a 2 BA tap through the UNF T nut. I'll probably go with option 3 as I have the tap & the 2 BA machine screws. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Very strange! I installed the nuts supplied a couple of weeks ago, from NTG, and purchased 2BA 1" pan head screws to install the seat runners. The screws were overlong, but that was to ensure the thickness of the carpet was not a problem. They ran through the nuts without a problem, so whatever the fine details, they work as described! |
Ian Bowers |
Strange indeed. Change in stock perhaps. The usual confusion is between 3/16 BSF and 2BA - where a nut and bolt will fit but not a longer thread. On the new ones I would run a 2BA tap through the nut as suggested. Dave H |
