MG TD TF 1500 - T Series Owners...what age?

Well, it seems that this weekend, I was considering some portrait photos and snapped a test of meself. Arrrggghh...who is that "older" gentleman????

Went right out and purchased some over-the-counter hair color and a few other sundries! Seriously, though, wha' happened? I am indeed gettin older. Sheesh.

Guess I am earning my status as a grandpa. Which got me to thinking, at what age did YOU folks buy your first MG T car? I wuz 56...

...bought this one when I was 48, got my first TC model when I was 12 after reading "The Red Car." Now I'm 50, and this TD will be "The British Racing Green Car With Black Fenders."

But all the other sports cars and motorcycles in my life wouldn't have happened without that book and the two red TC's and a Type M midget that my neighbor had when I was reading that darn book.

Now I'm the old guy with the funny car collection, and it's these neighborhood kids who are stopping by my garage. And the cycle fenders on my TD are the pair that have come from one of those red TC's of 1968.

Funny how life loops back on itself, isn't it.

I saw my first MG in 1948 (a TC) when in the 7th grade at Boston Latin School, and said 'someday I'll own one of those!' Well it took a while. I bought a 1932 J2 two years ago at age 68 and my TF last year at age 69. I am still looking for a TC and maybe this year at age 70 after my IRA kicks in. I drive the TF year 'round, on dry days, with no heater, and I never put the top up. All my friends head to their condos down south for several months but I like it here on Cape Cod all year.

My father sat in a new MGZA Magnette in the mid 50s in Macon , GA and really wanted to buy it (family man) but couldn't. He inherited his 50 TD in 1976 - he still drives it and he is now 80.

In 1959 I saw a '55 TF 1500 on a used car lot in the Albany - Schenectady area of New York State... The seed had been planted... I was 15 and my Dad, who was 58, was buying a new Morris Minor at the dealership at the time... I finally became the owner of a '55 TF 1500 when I was 57... So now I'm 63 and one of those "grey haired old guys" with a little red sports car... Life is good ;-)

I bought my TF1500 "basket case" in December 1973 when I was 21, after being turned down on a loan for a new MG Midget (only had 22 months left in Navy - NFCU would not do a 22 mo. loan - wanted me to extend my enlistment!) LOL. Had it rebuilt and running by August 1974 - been driving it since.

as fate goes I think I did much better on both accounts.

I am 54 now.

Got my first TD at 16, when my parents gave me the one they had on my birthday. Sold it the following year (1960) for $400 when I went in the Navy, and kicked myself for 14 years until I fond another one in 1974. I wasn't going to buy that as the guy wanted $2000 for it! and I was a young husband with a wife and two little children - wasn't practical. My wife talked me into getting it, saying we needed a second car and she could, after all drive a stick shift. We got the TD, which was in fair condition, but it ran well. For the next 7 years, that was my wife's car (I got to drive it on the weekends), which she used to do all the things a young wife with two small children do - in other words, she ran the wheels off of it, hauling groceries, kids, dog, even lumber in it. In 1981, when I said that I was going to restore it, I was told in no uncertain terms, that "you are not touching that car until I have another MG to drive!" Thus we now own a MGB in addition to the TD.

Dave L. - I ran a query like this some years ago (the ne in 2003) and tabulated the responses. If you want to see what I cam up with, e-mail me and I'll send them to you (I know, you've sent me your e-mail address before, but I didn't record it). Cheers - Dave

I am 58 and I bought my TD - half-basket back in 2003. Greatly enjoying the restoration project. Only sadness: whilst the car certainly looks younger during the multi-years restoration process, the restorer definetely looks older.....Greetings, Huib

My TF1500 became mine officially (title transfer) in 1999 when I was 45. Prior to that it had been in our family since 1960. I remember being smitten by that little car from the very beginning (six years of age) and through the ensuing 40 some years afterwards always wanting to own it. Now I finally do. It remains the "family car" in the sense it's still in the family, driven by all on occasion, and talked about regularly. It's just parked in my garage now instead of the folks. Interestingly, my girlfriends daughter (who's six years old) is completely enamored by the MG. If given a choice to ride in her mother's new convertible Toyota, or my Jaguar XK8 convertible, or the MG.....she prefers the MG.

Well I bought my first 'T' series, a TF1500, in August 1958. Sold it in 1974(?) and suffered a real identity crisis. Bought my TD, a candidate for restoration in 1992. Then saw an advert for a TF1500 with spare engine a few years later and bought it. They are both restored and on the road now. What a dilema, which one to drive today.

Hi To all,

Well, I literally have to much time on my hands, since I am now on vacation until after the New Year... As a result of this I took a look at the ages, at which the respondents were, when they acquired/bought a T Series car... I then took a total and determined the average... So far, based on the above list, the average age when a T Series became a "the other woman" in our lives is 44 years old... Isn't that curious?? That's about the age then a "mid-life crisis" can be expected...

Cheers,

Fell in "Love" with a TF1500 @ age 3!
For some odd reason owned just about everything else but one untill age 46!
(Austin's / Bug-eye's / TR's / Sunbeams / Triumphs / Morgan / Mini's ect.)
Could have actually afforded it with money I had saved to by 1st new car in the 60's ...but oppted for a shinny new 68 Firebird Covertable instead.
Funny when I went to pick-up "Izzy" the broker was trying to talk me "out" of the deal we had ....he had a 68 Firebird Convertable...he came close to talking me into it!

YOU SOLD A 3000 HEALEY AND A E- TYPE JAG. I bet you kick yourself each day over those. (But the TD makes up for it). I still have the TD and the B GT.
BEC Cunha

Since other makes have been introduced, I'll contribute the following. My TD is the fastest and best handling of my antiques. It shares garage space with a 1902 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, 1931 Model A Ford Victoria coupe, and a 1944 John Deere Model E stationary engine. Always something to do.
John Masters

I'm ashamned to say what I sold!

Let's start with a Ferrari 250 SWB (chassis 1931); followed more foolishly by a Ferrari 275 GTB/4 chassis 09285, now in Vancouver), followed by not one, but a pair of Abarth Zagatos 750's, an E-Type roadster, an Alfa 1750 GTC and many other I can't quickly recall.

I'd hate to think what those Ferraris are worth today - certainly WAY below what I sold them for!

Oh well, its just money!

I would have liked to live at your house Gordon. The 275 GTB is at the top of my list of cars I'd like to have. Second would be an XKE roadster. I have resigned myself to the fact that I could not afford them when they were new and that I will now never be able to afford them. Oh well.

I actually have never bought a T-Car, my wife bought it for me for my 60th birthday, some 9 years ago. For her it was a safe buy as we had known and driven the car in 1957 when it was owned by her cousins.

That's ok, I bought her a Steinway and it cost more than the T and only has tree wheels. However, its value has climbed about 5 times over the years. Not half as much fun though.

I, bought my first MG only 2 years ago, a 69 MGB-GT.

We love both of them.

Merry Christmas
Colin Stafford

Hey Colin,
So is it true? "Steinway's & Morgans"...."same suspension" components?
I think many of us are at that age of "why didn't I keep that one"! My list includes a 57 Ford retractable (sold 4 $150)
a 68 Firebird Covertable COFA Auto w/a 428
engine from the factory (sold 4 $500 and later deemed "the prototype for the 69 Trans-Am")
a 58 Morgan (sold 4 $1200)
a 58 Harley Panhead (sold 4 $800)
a few other's that hurt...joke is that we "live" in our Bug-Eye...we were smart enough that we sold that one for the down payment on the house we live in!

I would kick myself daily if it were not for my father....He owned and ran a used car lot late 50's & early 60's that sold mostly Eropean & American sports car's. The list of "wishihaditbacks" from him would bring tears to your eye's...2 that come to mind all the time when I see all these "kit-versions" were the twin Cobras..427 and a 289.

But then again...we have to remember the ones we had that we are glad we got rid of ...I do not miss my 71 Gremlin or my wife's 79 Plymouth wagon!

When I was 47 my father gave me the 1952 MG TD he restored in about 1980. A few years later he missed not having an MG in his garage, so I helped him find and purchase a nicely restored 1960 MGA. I've never lost my love of MGs and have had several others over the years.
I currently play with a 2001 Lotus Elise ( hope you will forgive me ?) and a 1991 1380 Mini Cooper.

However, a young (to me) friend has a TD and a Midget which has just received a 1380 transplant that I had built by Howley Racing in 1983.

So, keep passing on the enthusiasm and encouraging the youngsters - maybe they will have as much fun as we did!

Our MG TD has been in the Johnston Family since August 1972. My father (45yrs @ the time) purchased the car from a college student in Spokane, WA. After driving the TD for over 25 yrs, through most of Northern ID, WA & Northern OR, my dad passed the TD to me many yrs ago. I'm 50yrs old & plan on passing our family TD to one of my two young sons (ages 14 & 11). But, only after I have driven the Johnston Family TD to as many adventures, locations & states that my dad had done in the past. What a wonderful post! Happy & Safe Holidays to all! Joe (52TD)

I fell in love with the swept wing MGs back about 1956 when my brother had a windup one. Read the "Red Car" in high school. Had to have one. TC's my first choice were $2000 when I graduated from college. They were also rare in South Dakota. Found a TD for $1200 which I bought that very fall of 1967 at age 21. Still love it, but also pine away for the TC.

I did aquire a different type of TC in 1975: an MGA TC. That's still not running.

Also bought a 67 MGB a few years ago as it was a bargain.

Still wish for the TC, even though the twin cam is rarer and more potent.

There are now about 80 responses to this thread. Being somewaht of a stats freak, it would be interesting to plot a histogram of these ages, as there are probably enough data points to do so.

... problem is, that quite a few didn't actually state their present age. Just a little bit of history. I suppose one could extrapolate in many cases, but I don't have the time to do all those backward calculations!

Well,

We encountered our "Tuffy".
Actually my wife did.
A 1953 MG TD coloured red body and beige wings.
Biscuit coloured interior, beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!

It was she who saw it at an oldtimer automobile show in 1999. We were 55 at that time.

She fell immediately in love with it and named it "Tuffy" and purchased it straightaway.
Actually we were both at that particular oldtimer autombile show.
And I was looking for a Citroen (traction avant) but it never came to that. Been married 38 years.

Seven years later we are still in love with our "Tuffy". Great motoring, many adventures in Great Britain.

Now that we have the status of Grandpa and Grandma. Looking back on our previous cars we owned. First "Dumpy" a 1957 Renault 4, I was 22 years.
Scondly a new Morris Mini 1000. I was 24 at that time.

I myself drive a 1967 Volvo Amazon for about 31 years now, which I purchased in 1975. Great automobile. Still enjoying both cars immensely. I am 62 now.

Cheers.

Second major project: a 1959 MGA 1500 roadster at 26.(Both cars regrettably sold).
Third, a 1963 MG Midget at 33 (still under restoration).
Fourth, the 1952 TD at 40 (midlife crisis ???), waiting to be restored.

Birthdays are a bitch until you look at the other option.

I know for a fact that ABA,OSH, JIW will help get rid of that cadmuim bolt faster than Coke or Pepsi.

I've never named a car I owned. But have friends who have
65 4 door Nova "Nova Jean"
52 Chevy 5 ton Bob tail truck "Sanford" after sanford and son
60 4 door Oldsmobile 98 in high school " the love machine" I can confirm that
71 ford 5 ton septic tank pumper truck " chick magnet" have no idea why
50 chevy two door with split manifold " the gray hornet"

anybody else?

I am accepting suitable entries for my TF.

By the way my son has suggested " death trap on wheels"
something else about "MG pinto" due to the fuel tank position

Neither one acceptable

Several of my vehicle have acquired names. Sometimes to tell them apart, sometimes just for fun. Our TD Mark II has not gotten a name other than "the MG".

1930 Model A coupe, "Cindy Lou"
1931 Model A victoria, "Miss Vicky"
1971 Postal jeep, "Pink Panther"
1988 GMC box van, "Old Yeller"
1960 Ford Falcon, "Green Monster"
1965 Ford Falcon, "Sweet Thing"
John Masters

Never been able to name a car... think it might be a "Nellybelle" syndrome!

Imported "Humphrey" (52 TD) in 2002 from Salt Lake Ciy Utah at 57. At this stage he moves much better than I.
