MG TD TF 1500 - Tail light bulb replacement (round lens) '53 td

How to remove the rubber flange to gain access to the bulb assembly? Not successful trying to peel it back with my finger. Toothpicks? 1953 mgtd round tail lights. Thanks.

I would suggest that you remove the tailight assy and replace the rubber as is most likely original and has turned hard,
If you want you can use a small flat blade screwdriver and slowly peel back the lip to remove the red glass. You can also try warming the rubber up a bit with a hair drier.

If you're not in a rush rub some Glycerine into the rubber and it will gradually make it make it much more pliable. Great rejuvinator. Cheers

S.W., where are you. I'm on Gowensville between Greer and Landrum and I faced the same issue on my '53 TD.I was finally able to get the chrome ring released from the rubber surround carefully using a small flat blade screwdriver. I was replacing the bulbs with LED and discovered that the LEDs were so much longer than the incandescents that I could not put the red lens back on. Being more of a driver than a purist, I obtained a pair of Spridget bullet lenses and found that they fit perfectly.

Jud, I flipped the pic over as I received it upside down. PJ

Jud, Do you have the part number for that extended lens? PJ
PJ Jennings

No need to change lenses. I sell LED inserts for the late TD and TF Lucas L488 lamps. Check out www.brittrix.com and scroll down to L488. Brighter than incandescents and, by my light meter brighter than most led bulbs.

Classic Car LEDs in UK sell ones that fit.

Good luck finding the right bulb on Classic Car LEDs.

But why shouldn't you use LED bulbs - especially in tail lights?

Most LED bulbs use a few rear facing LEDs, but mostly side-facing LEDs. LED light is highly directional, so the vast majority of light from the side-facing LEDs is not aimed at where you need it - in the eyes of that texting driver behind you who is about to climb up your tail pipe.

Also, if you DO use LED bulbs, be sure the LED color matches the color of the lens. LED light is full spectrum and very different from incandescent bulbs. Thus, of you put a white LED bulb behind a red lens, approximately 70% of the light is filtered out. This is because white LED light contains very little light in the red spectrum.

I didn’t have a problem finding the correct ones, even posted a picture of one incandescent Vs one with LED.

And this guy stands behind his products.

Yours are probably good, so are his, andtgey work too.
