MG TD TF 1500 - Tailight issue
I have a 1951 MGTD, Restored with new wire loom, generator and all new lights including turn signals that were added. Problem is that the right rear light keeps blowing when I turn on the lights. It gets noticeably brighter than the left light when the lights come on. I have switched the wires around but to no avail. Right side stays brighter then burns out on the light filliment but the turn signal and brake light still work out. Any suggestions? |

Tom, I suspect that you have the leads reversed on your right tail light. You probably have the brake/turn wire connected to the tail light filament and the tail light wire connected to the brake/turn filament. The brake filament burns brighter and hotter with a shorter life expectancy. The tail lamp should get its power from the red wire (#41). The stop lamp should be connected to a white/brown wire (#15). Unfortunately, your after-market turn signals may use a different color. You should be able to cure this by just swapping some bullet connectors. |

Bad or no ground? Run a test jumper from the socket body to a bare metal spot on the frame. Check each pin in the socket with a stick tester or voltmeter with the other end solidly grounded. One should have 12V with tails, the other with brake/turn. They should be hot in the same positions as on the other side. |

Is it possible that even though you have the right color wires going to their proper places at the tail light that the wires have been transposed at the connection underneath the rear valance. Sandy Sanders |
