MG TD TF 1500 - TC Asbestos question
All right, I know this is not a TC BBS, but the TC one is pretty dead. The heat shield for the TC master cylinder originally had a sheet of asbestos to shield it from the heat, now alas long since gone. Does anyone have an idea what I could insert there to serve the same purpose, but more available and less toxic? Tom Lange MGT Repair |

You are right about the TC site being dead. Kilmartin sheet metal in Australia make new heat shields. They sell them without any insulation or they sell them with fibreglass sheeting. I put fibre board sheeting on my son's Austin Healey to replace the asbestos on the engine bay side of the footwell. I'm not sure how well it insulates but it looks very much like the original asbestos. Have a look at Kilmartin's site, they make lots of parts for our cars. |

Tom - A double layer of the sheet metal, with bit of separation between the two layers, would probably do just as good. Cheers - Dave |

Tom Go to your local hardware superstore and see if they have the Omat Soldering heat shield. There are a couple different brands on the market but I found the Omat pretty nice. You can also order this on line http://www.omatusa.com/OmatUSA_Heat_Shields.html Here are some of the others out there. http://www.onesupply.com/soldering-heat-shield.html This one is 9" x 12" http://www.mrsupply.com/harvey-torch-guard-and-reg-heat-shield-71032.html This one is 18" x 18" if you need a lot of material. http://www.alligatorperformance.com/heat-shield-torch-blanket-welding-p-8155.html This one is close in color and 9" x 12" http://homesplumbingsupply.com/shop/soldering-heat-shield/ |

Thanks very much. I'll pursue. Tom |

The TC forum on this site has never been active. They should have left it as a single T-Series forum. The place to go for TC stuff is mg-tabc.org. There is an email list and a discussion forum, the former being quite busy. Despite the close proximity to the exhaust pipe, I've never had any issues with heat in the braking system on my TC and I drive it through some seriously steep canyon roads regularly. I wouldn't worry too much about the missing material. |
