MG TD TF 1500 - TC update...I'm gonna make you cry

Finnally puttered around a little with a little.

Drained the fuel tank..about 3 or 4 gallons of 40 year old petrol. Couldn't get it to burn by throwing a flaming piece of paper towel in it. Should explain why your old lawn mower that hasn't been started in two years won't fire.
MG LaVerne

Bill came over with a few parts he had and we talked and tinkered just a little. Had him bring a couple of gallons of lacquer thiner with him and we poured it into the now empty tank. Hooked up the battery charger to the see if we could get the fuel pump to tick away. No go..jsut a little humm. So I replaced it with anew one I had on the shelf (Dan and Gene know why) and pumped some of the liquid through the lines which were still full of the old crap. The hose was shot between the pump and the carbs. When I got clean fluid I shut her down.

The old Monkey Wards battery is dry and I think I'll put some water in it and put the charger on it. It would be a miracle if it held a charge. I wonder what the warranty was.

Here is the pump I took off the car.

MG LaVerne

And in one of his boxes was what I guess was the original.

MG LaVerne

From JC Whitney...boy those were the days.

MG LaVerne

Days...1969 in fact. Check the cost of a stamp to.

MG LaVerne

Here's the part where I make you cry. Check the price of the pump. Compare that with Moss's price today of 215.00.

MG LaVerne

Also go down to NAPA and have them punch this number in....new points for your XPAG...good luck.

MG LaVerne

He has some other NOS Lucas stuff and some paper work from Moss...Tonneau's for 20.00. MGC engines...complete...395.00 I have to make a copy of this stuff. Gonna start getting some parts so we can get to work soon.
MG LaVerne

Well, well?????? Waiting with bated breath to see if you got it to fire!!!

I understand your excitement. I restored my TC 25 years ago. When I purchased it I was only the third owner and it was as it left the factory having sat for 22 years prior to my buying it. It has most of the period accessories (aero screens, Monaro Motors oil filter housing, panic handle, door safety catches etc). Whilst I fully rebuilt the timber body I re-used every other component so it is still "totally original" - (engine out to 1380cc).
I have to say that every time I either look at it or drive it I get the same feeling of privilege as I did the day that I first saw it - the feeling has never waned.
Just needed to tell someone.

Didn't even try Gene. Fuel hose was shot and I want to clear as much crap from the lines and tank as possible first. Added 10 more gallons of gas to the 2 gallons of thinner and will let it set for several days and most likely pump it all out and refill with some fresh petrol before firing. I guess the first test will be to wait and see if it springs a leak.Haven't even checked the carbs yet to see if they are frozen...wouldn't surprise me a bit. Did get the bonnet off today with the owners help. I'm supposed to be making a shopping list right now but I think I need a nap. I'll dream of cheap parts from JC Whitney. :-)

The fuel pump may have cost $14, but your salary would have been $1.50 an hour!
Steve Simmons

Moss TC Fuel pump (377-010) in 1977 - $34.75. 232% increase in six years. Thanks Jimmy.

The factory pump should have a brass base. This one looks like it was replaced at some point with an aluminum base pump. It looks great, thanks for sharing.

According to the BLS's CPI calculator, $14.98 in 1969 is $95.13 in today's dollars -- still a bargain compared to $215!
Rob Edwards

David, very early TC's had brass based fuel pumps, all the others had alloy bases.
Max Irvine

David,

Believe the aluminum bodied fuel pump was introduced in 1948 - since this is a late build (Nov 1948) it may have come with it.

LaVerne - That old Monkey Wards battery is not all that old - it has the ganged covers for the cells rather than individual screw on caps - probably somewhere in the 70s.

Send those two old pumps to me and I'll make them look like the new pump you installed, except they will have the correct end covers and terminal knobs on them.
Cheers,
David DuBois

I sent him an email tonight asking for permission to ship them to you David. Can you ball park the cost? Were talking 40 years on the battery...thats old in my book for a battery.

"Believe the aluminum bodied fuel pump was introduced in 1948 - since this is a late build (Nov 1948) it may have come with it."

My TC is Aug 1949 build and has a brass base SU pump. I know that it is original to the car.
Peter Malkin

Peter, to have a brass bodied pump on a late TC seems to be incorrect according to Mike Sherrell's book "TC's Forever". Would you mind telling how you know it is the original pump.
Max Irvine

Peter,
I tried to edit my post but I was a bit late. I am a member of the Vic T register and I think my car was made the day after yours so I am very interested in originality details for TC's of that time. My car is TC9375
Max Irvine

Peter,

I have two 1949 MG TC's and neither had a brass bodies pump when I bought them for restoration...that's not to say they didn't come with them originally but everything I've read (TC's Forever) and http://www.mg-tabc.org/library/fuel_pump/supump2.html seem to indicate that they didn't.

Like Max, I'm curious to know how you know your's is original to your car. Have you owned the car from new?

LaVerne, I went to the NAPA web site and they are showing those points , CS 313P as available! $ 7.99 online.

I'll bet it no longer fits an XPAG dizzy.

Here is a section out of the Moss catalog #11 dated May-9 1968.

This would date to my second or third order. I have two paid invoices Feb-4-1969 and Mar-1-1969, tucked into it.

The TC/TD pumps are priced as $18 (new-outright)
$13.50 (Rebuilt exchange)
The TF pumps are $20/$15.50 same way.

Max and Gene
My sincere apologies - a serious case of foot in mouth. I have just been out to look at my car and it has the original aluminium base pump. My confusion came about because I am in the process of rebuilding two brass based pumps and had brass on the brain.
My car id TC9356 so very close to yours Max.
