MG TD TF 1500 - TD 1720 lives on
As most of you know, I recently sold my TD after 41 years of ownership, and am so fearfull that new owners will not be able to properly take care of a car of that vintage without growing up with it and understanding its simpleness and possible quirks. They called me after a few weeks of driving it as I feared, with what I anticipated (brake pedal not like an SUV), but worst was a red light on the dashboard and very rough running and then, wouldn't start. I went today with a boatload of tools, (many sleepless nights thinking what could be wrong), he already had the air cleaners off, figuring that the reliable SU's were at fault. I asked him if he had been playing with anything else, tinkering as some of us do. No! "Let me try and start it, I think its the choke mechanism". No, first let me look on the other side. Within 5 seconds saw the small wire to the generator hanging down resting on the block. God does work, sometimes, in mysterious ways, and I thank him today. Took my tools home till another day! Sounds like they bought a "certified pre-owned"!! Hopefully, you can convince the new owners to take advantage of the expertise on this BBS, do some reading, and let you gracefully end your marriage to this car! |

Bob, Repeat after me: "A rough running engine is always electrical, until PROVEN otherwise." Now, back away from the carburetors... Glad you helped them out, they're lucky they bought from you! warmly, dave |

Steve, Bud, et al. Looking forward to meet at Mystic on sat. for a couple of OSH's. Where would I might likely find you? I may lead new TD owners over in my Healey, but probably in 3rd gear with overdrive switch off. Found 4 new bonett rubber bumpers in parts boxes that I will use as an excuse to go see car again, only 4 miles down the road. Each box I go thru produces so many wonderful memories, an extra fuel pump, King of the road turn signals,(one red lense missing), a plethora of whitworth bolts and nuts, on and on. If things turn around, I know where others are tucked away, 2 TF's, another TD,.... Where would we be without dreams? Bob |
