MG TD TF 1500 - TD 2000

Last weekend I found a postage-stamp from Malaysia with a TD on it. On closer inspection it was a TD-replica: the TD2000. Never knew they existed, doesn't look to bad, even if I wouldn't want do be sighted in it!

TD2000s are *built* in Malaysia these days.

They're pretty good too. Toyota drivetrain reliability with the availability of AIRCON in a T-shape. (Aircon is a must-have in the tropics!)

Not Bad.

If your goint to make a reproduction, This appears to be a nice ont.

TD2000 was an Australian invention back in the 1980s/90s, until the Malaysians came and bought all the designs & tooling in recent times.

There was one at the Melbourne MG Club 2004 Concours and the latest batch do look pretty well finished. As well as Morgan's latest efforts, imho.

Came across a TF replicar some yrs back too, not sure who made it. It looked pretty good, authentic enough to make me stop and offer assistance to the broken-down couple.

Unfortunately one look at the Nissan engine and I'm hopelessly lost, no idea why it wouldn't run.

Last year I was going through KL airport using airport transfers tonbridge and there was a TD 2000 on display in the main concours. A day or two later I was in Penang and there was a showroom with 5 of these cars inside and you could hire one on a daily basis. I could not get any info as it was early evening and the showroom was closed. When I got back to my hotel I asked at the front desk if they could get me some information. By 10.00 that night a full colour brochure was delivered to my room!!

The engine is a 1998 DOHC with 4 valves per cyl. electronic ign. 96kw @ 5600rpm.(130bhp). Rear wheel drive 5 speed box, auto also available. Disc brakes all round.

Price-F.O.B. Port Kalang £28,838 in a solid colour.
£29,939 in two-tone

Oh yes for you guys that drive on the wrong side of the road, LHD + £800 and auto box + £800. These prices were effective 2002.

It is very very nice but there is nothing quite like the real thing.

PS To Will in Aus. I hired a TF replica in the Cook Islands about 10 yrs ago and that had a Jap engine, built on a Triumph Herald chassis and was made in New Zealand. I saw quite a few in New Zealand but they were not so well finished as these Malasian cars

When these cars were first produced in Australia, the radiator surrounds were thought to be close enough to the original to be able to be used in restorations of our cars.

Also the fuel tanks were made of stainless steel that would be a great replacement for rusty originals.

Cheers,

Paul.

How hard would it be to adapt TD2000 to a TF2000...?

Think if one sacrificed the aircon condensor one could have enough room to lean the radiator shell back, fair in the headlights... :P

Then the TD2000 company could start competing against Moss as a supplier of body panels!

Might be hard to market any car without aircon in Asia though. :(
