MG TD TF 1500 - TD 52/3 Headlights
Could somone please supply following info re TD H/Lights for Right hand drive (in Canada). I was told they are 7" and possibly P700s. Is there a specific Part No (Lucas). Where might I get a pair? Thanks in advance. Kwn |

They're certainly not P700s. These are very large lamps fitted to early Rolls etc. TD headlamp buckets are neigh-impossible to get but in a pinch I have seen very successful adaptations of the hot rod item offered by JC Whitneypart #88DY8981Y at $50/pr. These are 6" deep chrome-plated and there are several lighting options, too. But if you want them for use in the UK/Japan etc,you will have to get sealed beam units with the 'dip left' feature, as against the 'dip right' that is used in North America with lhd cars. Dip left lenses etc are easily and pleantifully available from almost any UK supplier. However, for driving on the right hand side of the road, try www.jcwhitney.com Regards, Gord Clark #100 |

TD headlamps are Lucas S700. They were also used on the Y-Type. Check the previous discussion as some had plated buckets whilst others were painted. |

With a little egg on my face, I checked my "facts" only AFTER I had sent off my e-mail and I stand corrected, thanks to Bob Simpson. I note too, that the PL700 was a standard fitment to ZAs and ZBs. However I still stand my ground on the JC Whitney replacement(s). They are good value at $60 US per pair including halogen sealed beams. The catch is that they are 6" deep and care must be taken opening the side-bonnet. GAC |

Good quality repro lamps are available from Moss, Brown and Gammons, Abingdon, Holden Electrical and possibly the cheapest of all the MG Octagon Car Club. From what I read in their catalogues all have the Lucas medalion but I suspect they are chromium plated steel rather than brass. The club are advertising them for about £120 the pair. Gordon: <<<snip>>> I note too, that the PL700 was a standard fitment to ZAs and ZBs. <<<snip>>> The P700 and PL700 lens assemblies are a "tripod" with the three bars and the center emblem. The orginal lens bulb assemblies in the TD (and Z series?) didn't have the three bars and center emblem. |
