MG TD TF 1500 - TD Air Filter Stuff
So the owner's manual states to clean and re-oil the air filter every 3000 miles but does not explain how this is done. Found a few threads elsewhere that say to use Kerosene or take to a machine shop and have them put it in their bath.
Do you just soak it in Kerosene or what? Also after it is cleaned how do you re-oil it and is there supposed to be a small amount of oil in the lower pan like there is now? The pictures also show a ring of something that was in the center of the filter part. The screwdriver in one of the pictures is pointing to where it was. It went around about 90% of the way. It is brittle like a ring of carbon or an old gasket. Your thoughts. Thanks Stuart |

This is what you are looking for I think. Rod |

I have found that cleaning an old, dirty filter in petrol or kero does not clean enough of the wire mesh, which is why I recommend having a machine shop put it through their cleaning procedures. That often means baking, cleaning in a hot bath of solvent, cleaning in a hot water spray booth, and ultrasonic cleaning.
It obviously is not necessary to do that every time; once is enough, and the "wash the filter element in fuel" procedure will work fine. There is a line on the outside of the can to show the proper oil level. And yes, there was originally a cork ring between the two pieces; I don't think it is a big deal. I don't remember that anyone even makes one. Tom Lange MGT Repair |
