MG TD TF 1500 - TD and TF Hood Window
Hi All.
I am wondering if anyone has an original hood which still has has the rear hood window intact. The photo of the hood in 'The Original mgtf midget" website of TF9052 seems to indicate the size of the window as being around 22"x 7" ? Frank Cronin, before restoration your TF was a very original, well cared for car. Although unlikely, did it still have its original hood ? What size window did you decide on when having a new hood fitted ? Also, is there any Factory record of the original size of TD hood rear window ? Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Ian on Bribie Island who's still has the TF that he bought new is on his third top but enlarged the rear window in the 70's so he can't help. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

TF8541 sure looks like it has an original top and there is a direct rear view picture. From here you could measure the distance between the fuel tank straps, fuel tank and the approximate distance between them that the rear window occupies. From this you can get a very close approximation of the width. The height you can measure from the bow to the top of the body rail and then get the percentage the window takes in that dimension. I would guess doing this you can get within 1/4". |

22"x 6" I suspect is the answer. Cheers Rob Grantham |

Rob, The original hood was replaced long ago by my grandfather in the mid sixties. However, Kimber Creek had original patterns for TF hoods when he bought the business from Collingburn. I can measure what I have he made for me and forward. Frank TF1414 |

Frank do Kimber Creek use a capping piece to trim the edges of the side curtains and hood or are the edges folded in and stitched as they were originally? I know Moss use the capping and I was really disappointed when I received mine. Even more so when I overlaid them over the side curtian frames. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Estimates above are really close! Width 21 3/4" Height 6 1/2" Peter, edges rolled in and stitched. Frank TF1414 |

Hi Frank, Thankyou for your response on the TF rear window sizing. I am wondering if the TD rear hood window is the same size ? Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Wow! I don't think you could do any better than that Frank. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

"I am wondering if the TD rear hood window is the same size ?" Sure looks similar but the rounding of the corners does not look as big as Franks top. Maybe there was some artistic licensing going on there. |

// rant on
BTW for a show only car I can understand wanting to recreate the small rear window. But from a driving standpoint that size is terrible and dangerous. Take the tiny rear view mirror we already have and force it through that tiny window and it's fairly useless. Hence why I also "never" drive with my top up anyway. I need to see everything I can while out and about. Driving today is dangerous enough with the speed differences, bad driver attention, aggressiveness of drivers, poor safety features of the car ... |

Christopher, I fully agree with your comments, particularly " bad driver attention, aggressiveness of drivers" . In 43 years of TD ownership I've probably only had the top up for 20 minutes. |
