MG TD TF 1500 - TD/C Mark II and Mallory Distributor questions

A couple questions;

Should the fender side fuel pump have a neutral wire like the engine side fuel pump? Can this neutral wire be wired in a series between the fuel pumps? My fender side fuel pump has only a positive wire connection.

Both fuel pumps build up heat and are hot to the touch. Is this normal?

Can a Mark II run on one fuel pump in a pinch?

My distributor is a Mallory with two (2) sets of contact points and the condenser is attached to the outside of the dizzy. Is the gap setting for these points any different than for a single Lucas contact? If not what is the correct gap setting?

Where can I buy a "red" replacement rotor, replacement points and a condenser for the Mallory. These parts look very different than pictures for a Lucas distributor set up I see in parts catalogs.

This distributor has screw in wire connections to the coil an plugs.

Thanks for any comments. Tim

Can only dimly remember, but I believe the second fuel pump is grounded with a jumper to the first, and the wiring look has a ground that also connects to the first pump. Dan Craig may well remember better than I. My comment is based on two of my Mark II cars, one restored, one original but modified somewhat for racing on thew 1050's.

Both pumps will heat up to a certain degree, but not HOT to the touch. When idling they should only run every 15 seconds or so, if my car is any model. Dave DuBois can better comment.

Yes, a Mark II gets plenty of fuel with one pump. Most of the Mark II's I have bought have only one pump in place.

There is a whole ritual for setting up and timing a Mallory, whether a new one (red cap) or old one (black cap, with long swan's neck). Parts are NOT interchangeable with Lucas parts, and can be bought from Moss or a Mallory distributor (sorry...) if you have a new unit. If an old one, gab what you can on the Internet, because they are no longer made.

Try Mallory or Moss for set-up instructions.

Tom is correct, the ground should be daisy chained i.e. ground wire goes to one pump, then a wire goes from the ground connection on that pump to the other pump. The pumps will get as hot as the engine compartment, but the pumps themselves should not get hot from running. Cheers - Dave

I don't know if it's true for the 4 cylinder engines but I suspect it is.

I had several Mallory distributors on Chevy, Ford, and Olds V8s and they all, as far as I remember, took the same tune-up parts. If that's true for the 4s there should be parts out there still or even new replacements. Mallory is still out there in some form, google and call them.

I'm pretty sure the point gaps were the same for all of them but the advance curves were tailored, and changeable.

Hello Tim
If you have one of the newer Mallory Dual Points go to the MGA with an attitude website at http://mgaguru.com
Somewhere on Barny's site he talks about using a newer Mallory dual point on his MGA- with instructions on setup. Just type in Mallory into his sites search box.
If you are planning on using an older 'Y' series distributor I've emailed you a pdf of an old Mallory Master Parts List that might be of help.
