MG TD TF 1500 - TD Electrics and Women
I confess to knowing little about automotive electrics (or women) but perhaps the former is an easier task to tackle. TD Horns. I understand that there is a hot wire from the regulator direct to each of the two horns. The other wires from the horns go to ground via the horn switch. Why is it that when I connect the hot wire to the horn a test lamp indicates both sockets are hot. The chasis (body) of the horn is not alive but the sockets are. I assume that therefore if I place the other wire onto the post it becomes live and when I hit that little dash button Harry Houdini comes alive. Am I right/wrong? Why are both terminals alive when I assume one should be dead ready to go to earth via the button?. Any help would be appreciated or alternatively we can discuss the alternative topic above. Thanks in anticipation as the lady is almost ready for the road. Bill C. |

Hello Bill, --- You have just discovered Ohms law in action. Since your voltmeter draws very little current, you don't measure any difference in voltage on the two sides of the horn. But when the horn push is exercised the 12 volts appears across the coil in the horn. If this does not explain it to your satisfaction I will work out an example and send it to you off the board. The example would not fit in this sized space. I'll be away this weekend so will not get to answer till next week. Bob |

R.K.... ok, will you explain women now? |

Yes, please explain women to me as well. I'm on #3 and I still don't know anything about them yet. As far as the horns go, you will have power on both sides of the horn. The horn has a hot wire from the fuse block, the hot side of the battery, going into the horn, power is feed through the horn right up to the horn button. When you push the button you now complete the circuit to the ground side of the battery. Just a very loud doorbell, and the same as a simple flashlight. |

Bob, That would be great. To all, thanks for that and I suggest for sanity and survival reasons we leave the other subject alone. Regards Bill C. |

TS's are jsut like women. You have to care for them, pretty them up, spend a lot of money on keeping them looking nice. Occasionally, they get new paint jobs, or body work. Fun to take out and show off, or great for a day out just you and her. |

All the advice is great for the daily driver, but what about the others waiting in the basement for their turn at bat? Paul |
