MG TD TF 1500 - TD Head Lamp bracket to guard space

Hi all

As my guards had considerable rust, they have needed extensive body work. As the lip that goes in front of the Dumb Irons were missing on both guards, these needed to be refabricated.

I have received the guards back and test fitted them, but they appear not to be correctly shaped, as the Head Lamp Bracket is very close (1/8") to the guard, even with some packing between the guard and bracket. Also the valance doesn't fit between the guards.

I have had a look at Dave's website and various photos of TDs, but the gap between the guard and bracket is indeterminate, but appears to be about 1/4".

Could some of you please measure the gap and/or post front-on photos showing the guard / bracket gap.

ps. Can someone with easy access to front of their TD, please measure the vertical space/distance from the top of the dumb iron end and the guard.

Copy of photo from Dave's website (I hope you don't mind) showing gap and distance I would like measured.

Although my TD has long since been reassembled, I took this photo when I was installing an MGB Anti-Sway bar. I have no measurements for you but perhaps the picture will be of some help in showing the distance between the dumb iron and what we call the fender (guard?)

Presuming "guard" means wing or fender, the headlight bracket to wing distance at the closest point is 1/2" right side, 3/8" left. The dumb iron to wing is about 3/4" at the front, 3" directly above the radiator crossmember. George

As George says the closest the dumb iron gets to the fender is 3/8".

Make sure you have the support rubbers under the radiator as that height will affect the clearance.

Thank you for your replies.

I took the left hand front guard/wing and make some modification to the panel where it attaches to the chassis and made a cut it section in front of the dumb iron. This guard/wing now fits and has the 3/8" gap between it and the head lamp bracket.

The steel section adjacent and in front of the R/H dumb iron was missing and has been replaced, but I think it is positioned incorrectly. I am sure the section in front of the dumb iron is not far enough forward - causing the incorrect fit.

Before I could start work on the R/H guard/wing, I noticed water dripping from front of engine - top radiator hose split. On removing the hose I found the top of thermostat covered in yellowish orange goo. All cleaned up and new hose ordered. I will check my radiator position before fitting a new hose (and possibly changing the upper radiator outlet position (see my post of about 2 years ago)) and working on R/H front guard/wing.
