MG TD TF 1500 - TD Igniton
Hi My TD's been running fine until yesterday, where it simply just stopped 50m up the road - just as if the ignition was switched off. Haven't done much yet, but 12V is OK to the coil and the rotor looks OK as well. The bushings in the distributor was replace last year The question is: if I start to replace components should I go for electronic ignition instead? Will I gain anything by switching? rgds Torben |

...does voltage come out of the coil...spark plugs sparking? Points? Rotor? |

That was quick!! Can't tell you yet as this happended yesterday, but I guess I'll look into it tonight. But I thought I'd ask the question about electronic ignition already now, to find out if it is a good idea to rebuilt now when I need to do the repair anyway? Although I know it doesn't come for free.. |

Torben, In your thread, you say it just stopped as if the ignition was switched off. Was there any sputter from the carbs which might indicate a fuel pump problem? Both electrical and fuel systems should be considered. George |

After a bit of rest, would it again start and run? Of course, it could be any number of things, but before getting too involved, I would pull the plug leads when the car won't run, and see what kind of spark you are getting. I once had a similar intermitant problem and it turned out to be a coil that would fail after about 10 minutes of driving. After it was allowed to cool for a couple of hours, the car would start and run fine for another 10 minutes and then the cycle would repeat itself. |

Torben, To answer your question about an electronic ignition replacement for the points the short answer is "yes". The long answer would be "yes" also but then I'd have to explain it. If the pertronix ignition system is available to you in Denmark I'd highly recommend it. http://www.pertronix.com/ |

Pertronix will ship from the US...used them on my TF and Jag MK2 - very reliable and hiden nicely under the original distributor cap. Dave MG TF 1955 |

Hi all. Did some fault finding last night. Found the coil to be defective, replacing the coil and the lead going to the distributor cured the problem. I'll try to look up pertronix locally, and probably swop ignition system. Thanks a lot everyone. Torben |

I used Pertronix in two "B"'s and loved it....Just remember, you will need the correct one for your ground polarity. Edward |

Torben, If at all possible, you should try to get a Pertronix system for your TD. While there are several systems available, the Pertronix is not only the the least expensive, but in my opinion, extremely reliable and very easy to set up. Once set, it will run forever. Here, a Pertronix for positive ground for a TD/TF, sells for about $90. I would probably buy from the Little British Car Company (http://www.lbcarco.com/pertronix.htm) as their service is excellent. I'm sure they would ship to you in Denmark. I've had mine now for three years and I haven't had to make any adjustmenst at all. It just runs. And starting is excellent, too.
