MG TD TF 1500 - TD II ???
This "restorers dream car" TD on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31858&item=4522976093&rd=1) has me puzzled. Gordon also calls his a TD II. Nothing in my books talks about this distinction. Can someone elucidate? John |

John, it's not a MkII. In this case the TD2 is just the standard nomenclature that the factory used on the cars after the 8" clutch became standard. A MkII would say TD/C. You should buy a copy of the NEMGTR T Series Handbook. |

Anyone purchasing this car should be very careful, particularly if they are from Washington State. The "VIN" is incorrect and in any state that does an inspection of such things will not find that number anywhere on the car. I have gone through such a situation in Washington and it became quite a hassle to get the car registered. The car is NOT a TD MKII as Bud states, it has a XPAG/TD2/... engine, which is just the later XPAG engine that has the 8" clutch among other changes to the engine that came about at the same time. The seller does not give the car number, which would include the number and market code letters on the maker's plate on the front of the tool box and would also be stamped on the left front dumb iron. It would further start with TD/c if it was a TD MKII and the car would have 1 1/2" carburetors and auxilliary friction shocks. Finally, the car did not come from the factory with wire wheels as the seller says he doesn't know but implies that they did - TDs were never produced with wire wheels. Cheers - Dave |

The person that is writing does not say TD2 (though she says "it also shows the engine No: XPAG/TD2/LHX13532"), nor does she claim that it is a Mark II. Anyway, I am asking more questions as I suspect that it is the clutch thing. I have a Mk II BTW. John |

When i purchased mine, i knew nothing about TD's...(heavens...i think i got Ds,Cs,and F's mixed up). Now with the various forums and sites it is a bit clearer. The seller made it clear to me that the car was a TD2....not a "Mark II". It wasn't until later that i learned the distinction... As mentioned above... the early TD's were TD's... the later with the larger dry clutch were 2's... and throughout the production (from the start), the "racing" models were MKII's..... And, to make it all clear, they called them a TD/C |

That's got to be one of the best listings I have ever seen on ebay! What David says about the vin goes double here in Ohio! My NJ title for my TF had a typo "/" got changed to a "1" ...6 trips to the local BMV later (with books, pictures, heritage cert. and finally the "vin plate" off the car) I finally got them to correct it! The funny thing, to all of us, is that what finally convenced them was the "vin plate" removed from the car! I wasn't about to tell them you can "buy" those as a blank and put anything you want on it! I even took my lap-top in there with 50 or so attempts at getting something you could "read" off the engine & frame stampings. In the end it was the "plate" that did it! Cheers, David 55 TF1500 #7427 |

Dave Dubois, Not all TD Mark IIs were shipped with the Andrex friction-type shocks, and most (but again, not all) were shipped with dual fuel pumps. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

The things that made a Mk II were dual fuel pumps, larger carbs, and dual shocks in each corner along with an extra leaf (or 2 mabey?) in the rear springs,,, I would question any one describing TD as a Mk II with out those items.... SPW |
