MG TD TF 1500 - TD Ingnition Light switch
Hi all Whilst going through some boxes of bits and pieces last night I came across the light / ignition switch which I thought I had lost. Is there a way of testing the electrics in it even though the key is missing? Is it possible to get a key cut using the code on the barrel? Can some one please post a close up photo of the dash instruments as I wish to see what is written on the front of the switch. Mine has 3 dots, I presume for off, park lights and headlight. Also, after viewing Dave Braun's photos it would appear a spring holds the switch in place. Is this correct? Is there another method of holding the switch in place as I have no spring? cheers Stuart TD 29271 |

Stu, I can't comment on the TD switch, as its been 54 years since I owned a TD. But on the issue of a key, yes, you should have no trouble cutting a key for the lock. If you do have trouble finding someone, let me know the nbr. and I can have it cut here and mail it to you. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Had one cut using just the number on the front of the barrel..... Keys for Little British Cars Acme Lock and Key, 2085 Lawrence Ave E. Scarborough, ON 416-699-9999 Lots of places seem to have blanks... |

Thanks for suggestions of where to get a key cut. A local locksmith has been able to cut keys which work. Over the coming week I will set up a test bench and test internal switch function. In the mean time I would still like answers to the following: Can some one please post a close up photo of the dash instruments of a late TD(July 53) as I wish to see what is written on the front of the switch so I can replicate. Mine has 3 dots, which I presume for off, park lights and headlight. Also, after viewing Dave Braun's photos it would appear a spring holds the switch in place. Is this correct? Is there another method of holding the switch in place as I have no spring? cheers Stuart TD29271 |

Abingdon Spares lists the wire clip (spring) which holds the switch in place for under $8. Part#39 002a. Gordon's shot of the dial is correct as original for all TD's as far as I know. George |

Mine (TD 29228) is different - BUT - I have no idea if it is original. As you turn the lever the little opening exposes the writing (OFF, etc.) see pic

Chris: The switch you have was used on British cars of the period, but is not original to the TD. Cheers Larry |

You can order a decal here (near the page bottom): http://www.vintagemotorspares.com/phdi/p1.nsf/supppages/hodge?opendocument&part=4 Cheers Larry |

Larry, Thanks for the info. I can only assume that it was replaced during the rebuild about 15 years ago and was probably a simple mistake, assuming both types were available at the time. ... Chris |

Stuart - there is a switch listed for sale on ebay (UK) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300250372741 - the photo looks to me to be like what you have described. They are calling it a pre war switch for a TA TB. May be of some help. ... Chris |
