MG TD TF 1500 - TD is Finished!
After 10 years and 6 months my '52 TD restoration project is licensed and back on the road. I still have a number of things to complete, like the side curtains, but at least I am now able to drive and enjoy. Fortunately, Oregon accepted the engine # which California had used for the vin#, so no problems there. Now if I can just figure out why the rebuilt gearbox keeps jumping out of 3rd gear, especially when running on compression, I will be a happy camper. Any ideas anyone? Don |

Congrats, Don. Looks great!! Enjoy it and put some miles on it. I seem to recall something about that jump out of 3rd when releasing the throttle. Maybe somebody will jump in here. Bud |

When I took my gearbox apart one of the bolts holding a shifting fork to a selector shaft was broken off and allowed to the fork to move on the selector shaft. I imagine that, or a loose bolt, would allow your gearbox to pop out of gear since the shift fork holding a gear could move. Just one possibility. Tim TD12524 |

Congrats, Don! It looks great. As for the jumping out of 3rd gear issue, apparently it was quite common. A long explanation and possible cure is found on the following link - scroll down to the long paragraph under the engine cross section drawing. http://members.optusnet.com.au/bobmccluskey/gearbox.html Hope this helps! Don - one more link here - Hugh Pite offers up a fix in this one: http://www.mg-cars.net/mgtd-mgtf1500-bbs/third-gear-jump-2010121710330411227.htm BobbyG |

Nice car Don. Colour looks good too. I'll ask a couple of gearbox gurus here about your problem. You could also try Barrie Jones. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Newly finished TDs are to be sent to me for testing... new rule. Let me know when you can get it here. Shake-downs, etc., take about 2 years, so I hope you have another one to work on in the meantime. ..... |

Looks great. Check shift fork lockbolt as mentioned above, also that the flange/tailshaft nut is really tight. George |

Don, Congested on getting it roadworthy. I had the same vin on my TF. The car was originally shipped to california, and then spent many number of years in Oregon before I brought it up here. It has always bugged me that the vin was not really the vin, but in fact the engine number. But, it is not up to me so I do my best to ignore it and move on. Alex |

I'm with you Alex, but when I asked about getting it changed I was told I would need to first get the California title changed, then come back to get the Oregon title. I'm just glad it still has the original engine. Mitch - good one but not a chance! Thanks everyone for the ideas on the 3rd gear problem. I will check things out and let you know what I found. I also forgot to mention one positive note - the clock actually works and is accurate! Cheers, Don |
