MG TD TF 1500 - TD rubber strips

Helping a friend get a TD back on the road,does anybody have any tips on shaping the ends of the running board rubber strips on the TD ?. I have experimented with a blunted pizza wheel to fit the straight bits but need to correctly shape the ends.

Except for the cooling hoses, starter motor, oil filter, windscreen wipers and fuel pump, TF's are much easier to work on :-}

Cut them about 1/4" longer than the opening (at least until you are comfortable with how to do it).

Then using a knife cut a V on both ends and make sure it fits into the runners. You will probably need to trim a bit since I asked you to cut it 1/4" too long.

Now remove the strip and take it over to a grinding wheel. Roll the V tip around on the grinding wheel at a 45 degree angle so you end up with a rounded slope at each V end. Make sure you don't grind any of the length off.

You can also do the same with a belt sander but I find the grinding wheel so much easier.

Pro Tip: Where a dust mask (surgical mask) unless you like rubberized black lung.

I found a popsicle stick is a good tool to persuade the rubber strip to snap into place.

AM rubber strips and original aluminium treads don't co-operate and vise versa. That's the case with the stuff from Moss. The profile is off. Just something to be aware of. New with new and old with old is fine. The original aluminium cleans up really well with varying grades of paper and glycerine does wonders on rejuvenating the original rubber. Cheers
