MG TD TF 1500 - TD Tachometer-Spedometer Clamp
Hi: Where does the clamp for the tachometer cable (Moss 161-795 or Abingdon 63/073) attaches to? Does the speedometer cable uses one also? Thanks. |
Stuart J. Ramos |
They attach outside the firewall, onto one of the bolts that comes through from the inside of the firewall to fasten the lower firewall plate on. The bolts (one on each side) are longer than the rest, so the bolt extends well through the captive nut. You then put the clamp over the extended bolt, and fasten with a nut. I don't have any pictures handy, but maybe someone here does? The clamp just holds the cables up, so they don't just lay on the edge of the firewall. George |

Stuart and George, thanks for bringing this up, one more detail my car was lacking and that I was unaware of. I'll be sure to order a pair before I assemble. Should the brackets be black, or body color? warmly, dave |

Hi George and Dave: Thanks for your help. Dave's question about the color of the clamps needs answering. Any takers? Stuart |

Black Brackets. |

Forgot to mention the rubber bushings in the brackets. Noise abatement? |

Hi Jim: Thank you for the information about the color of the tach and speedo cables clamp. Where does the grommet fit, in the loop of the the clamp or in the firewall hole? Do you have a picture of the clamp-grommet you can show here? Thanks, Stuart |

Hi Stuart, TFs at least have a 'clamp bracket' for the support of the tachometer cable-sounds similar to the TD.The split rubber grommet fits inside the clamp. This 'split' rubber sleeve is the very same one originally supplied with TFs to support the two main cables going to the headlamp and Sidelamp. One of the metal loops under each front guard should have one of these split rubber grommets. They are usually missing even in so-called Concours cars! I purchased these correct split rubber 'sleeves'from Brown and Gammons UK. not that long ago when restoring the current TF. Of course, there should be a round rubber grommet in the back of the Battery box wall area through which the Tachometer cable passes. Hope this helps. Rob.Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Hi Rob, Do you have the Brown & Gammons part number for the split grommet. I can't find it my TD catalog. Cheers John |

John, B&G show a 'grommet' as part of the rev. counter cable. The part nbr for the grommet alone, is 134995. I checked both the Moss Europe and Anglo British catalogues, and neither show this grommet. I don't think split grommets are hard to find. I picked up a catalogue of a local supplier of a wide range of rubber parts, and they showed several of different sizes and materials. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Hi JOHN, The part is on page 38 0f the TD/TF Brown and Gammons catalogue-illustration no.35,part number ACH 8529. On a TF they were originally used on the Tachometer clamp(in the loop) but also as previously described in the metal 'loop'under the front guards holding the two main harness lines to prevent rubbing. I measured these split rubber grommets('sleeves')and found them to be 15/16 ths of an inch in total length, and approx.9/16ths of inch in diameter(excluding the 'swollen ends').They fit perfectly in the TF application, and if the TD Tacho.clamp is the same dimension as the TFs,should be a spot on fit. Cheers Rob.Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

I found the clamp and rubber bushing for the speedometer cable in the Abingdon Spares catalog. They are shown on page 43 as items 87 and 88 respectively. I think they are misidentified on the parts list because the names indicate they are for the starter cable. I have never seen one on the starter cable. |
