MG TD TF 1500 - TD/TD MK II & TF sterring wheels

TD & TF experts - Can anybody sort out this question of 'originallity'. I have several NOS TD steering wheels ( originals are 'dated' on the back side like Lucas driving/fog lamps ) and all are a darker soft brown w/marble-pearl. I have found in my stash over the weekend a NOS wheel that I put away 15+ years ago marked TD MK II/TF. This wheel is medium/dark green w/black, tan-yellow marble/pearl. but no date that I can find. Overall it is identical to my other wheels (finger grooves center hub design, etc. There is also two numbers inside the hub that I can not find in any of my reference materials, 727276 & 7/9335/0. I have heard from others that TD MK II's & early TF's used a similar color where but I can also not document that anywhere. I guess it is possible that this particular wheel was or could have been used on another marque, ie. Morgan. Can anyone shed any lite on this. Thanks mick

Mick - We have that same steering wheel on our 53 RHD MK 2 TD. I can't get to the numbers but if they are important I'll have my hubby take it apart for you. I sure hope you get more feedback on this subject, we would like to know the details from others. We have also heard from others that this is the correct color for a MK 2 & this car but we don't know about earlier TDs or if they did use them on TF cars. Our 53 is a one owner car and has not been restored. The original owner was stationed in England in the US Air Force and bought the car new. We bought it from him a couple of years ago now. Our other TD, a 51 (not a MK 2) has a brown original wheel that is getting tired and cracking badly. Would you consider selling one of your NOS wheels ? Sara

I purchased a steering wheel a few months back that sounds like your first one. It is a darker brown. The one on my TDis more of a cream.

I will look tonight at both. I believe others have said that the T series steering wheels were also found on other cars of that period.

Mine, and several other MKIIs I've seen, have a GRAY marbled rim.

Mick, can you be a little more specific as to where this date is located? Thanks.
Bud Krueger

Hi Bud - Good to hear from you again. The date is normally stamped in softly on the BACK side. The outer rim with the finger notches go into the 3 sets of spokes to the center hub. Where the cast material from the outer rim joins the spokes is where this date will be. The area that I speak of is the 1" x 1" tranishion area. I hope I have expained what you need.

Mick

PS: Chances are you will have to take the wheel off and use a magnifying glass to see it, unless you are a skinny bloke and want to work upside down. Anyone out there that does look for this date, please let the group know your findings. thanks

mick

Would someone who has found this dating please capture an image of it and send it to me? I'd like to post it on Ttalk so that others can see it. Thanks, Bud.

Hello, ya' all! We have been away and just got back so will have to catch up a bit. My hubby did pull the steering wheel off the TD this morning and sure enough there is a date of 1 51 on it. You can not see it very well but with a bright light and magnaifiing glass it IS there. I am surprised to see that this thread has not had more replies. I think this is an important find and good information, why hasn't anyone taken the time to look and give some feedback or does everyone have a reproduction wheel maybe? sara d

Sara, I think you figured it out. My original wheel in my attic was wrapped with "rope" and coated with some yucky black enamel stuff by some previous owner. No chance of finding a number under that mess! Present repro wheel is hard plastic, weird pinkish-brown wheel that Moss positively said was the original color about 10 years ago.

I really don't want to take the wheel off to look for it. a cursory glance hasn't shown a thing. I'd feel much better if I could see an image of one to know what to look for. Mick's even offered to send me his so that I can get an image of it. How about you, sara? Can you get an image of it for us?
Bud Krueger

Bud - Thanks for your note. I will try, but I think the image is SO 'light' that it will not come out with my digital camera, as I said I had to get a mag to see it (partly due to my old age eyes). You say that Mick will send you his original wheel to inspect, WOW. I have had several occasions to buy some of his spares and they are better than new, for sure better than what is being sold on todays market and he normally has anything you want. sara d

Sara: Which dates did you find on your two TD wheels? One was 1 51 which I assume was on your brown wheel? What was the date on your grey wheel on the MK II?

So the numbers are stamped on the 'plastic' material where it meets the spokes on the rear of one of the spoke areas?
Most plastic from the original wheels is so 'shrunken' that will be hard to see.... Will check my rims and see if there is any plastic left.

Chris & Gordon - Yes, you are both correct. The 51 TD has 1 51 but there is no date on the 53 MK II wheel that I can find. Also, the date on the 51 was exactly where Mick said it would be but I have to tell you, you have got to really look hard to see it. Sara D

I just got this URL in my email for a company in AU that restores steering wheels. Looks like they do quality work.

Nothing on mine, however, the plastic is in really horrible shape...shrunken and cracked. Looked at it through a 10x loupe and couldn't find anything.
