MG TD TF 1500 - TD/TF Additional Brake Fluid Reservoir

I am investigating fitting an additional reservoir to the brake master cylinder, the reservoir to be up in the engine compartment. Articles suggest to use the same approach and kit as used on many Morris Minors – that is to connect the reservoir to a drilled version of the blanking plug at the rear of the master cylinder. I would like to know why it is not connected to a new non vented filler cap? There is just room for this in a TD where as I suspect there is not in a Morris minor.

I do a kit for it. It is much easier to tap into the rear blanking than run pipes to the filler cap. The kit for the Morris Minor is supplied with a sweaty not fit for purpose plastic tube and is very kind to your paintwork. My kit is stainless steel braided Teflon. The banjos and fittings are also stainless. It is very high quality but not cheap.

I fitted a TRW master cylinder, which didn't have the blanking plug, otherwise I would have fitted Declan's kit. This would have been more convenient than topping up the mastercylinder in the footwell (which I had to do many times to bleed the brakes fully with silicone brake fluid).

Thanks very much for the prompt reply. I was looking at the filler cap since it is easy to get to and most of the information about fitting onto the rear blanking plug said it required a good amount of engineering/work. Since in either case the filler cap has to be changed and there is a good amount of room around the filler cap I could not see the problem with coming off there with a 90 degree hose tail for the correct pipe. I fully agree with you about the quality of the pipe wok and reservoir.

It is of course an option and for master cylinders without a rear blanking plug probably the only option. I did look into it at the time. There is enough clearance to come out at 90°. You can see the clearance on this drawing which I did to check on clearance with the five speed conversion.

Guys, I have trouble seeing the point - sure, it will work, but unless you are rapidly losing fluid, why bother? If you are rapidly losing fluid, you've got more troubles than just periodically checking level under the carpet.

However you do it, the underbonnet portion shouts 'Unoriginal'.

Only point I see is that however often you bleed the brakes, the fluid will be in better (less polluted) condition. Most likely if you do bleed yearly with normal setup, additional fluid space will cause you to just bleed every two years instead.
