MG TD TF 1500 - TD Trans/driveshaft tunnel gap?

My front floors are in with the driveshaft tunnel under the plywood. In fitting the trans tunnel there is a substantial gap between the two. What fills this space? I see no reference in the Moss catalog or in the restoration books. Also I powder coated all the pieces and I am wondering what material is suggested for sound deadening and heat shielding for the tunnels and toe boards to replace the old asbestos matting? Is there a pattern set out there to help with fitting the pieces? Is there padding on the plywood or do the carpets lay as is on the floors. Looking at the remnants of my old floors it appears carpet tacks held the carpets in place. Same with the foot well. Does this sound right?

Floorboards go on top of the transmission tunnel.

Is this the gap your speaking of? The cover is loose here so the gap is exaggerated. PJ

Paul Yes that's the gap

Mine has about 1/8th inch gap there. I'm using a piece of the old rear bonnet rubber with the lip cut off as a filler. On mine it is the right thickness to seal the gap up. I don't know what the factory used to seal that area up, maybe Jute, good question. PJ

Dont be concerned about this gap if you are going to install adhesive backed sound proofing. These products are very malleable and can be molded to take care of issues such as this.

Chris, are you sure the trans tunnel is under the plywood? It seems counterintuitive for servicing the transmission. then it would require pulling the floors as well to do a R%R I ask this as there are no captive nuts in the sheet metal floor flanges to bolt the floors to. Also, my holes in the cover's front flange seem to line up with the toe board/firewall when sitting on top of the plywood.

Graeme I forgot about the old asbestos sound deadener. I know it was on the trans tunnel but don't remember if there was any on the driveshaft tunnel. I think all it had was glue remnants from the carpeting.

I also noticed that in either Schach's or Green's book it is stated the carpeting is installed on the driveline tunnel and then the floors are bolted over the top and pinches the carpeting between the floors and the tunnel flanges. Is this correct?

Are you speaking about the tunnel or the trans cover? The tunnel is under the floor boards and the trans cover is on top. The trans cover can be removed without disturbing the floor boards if needed. After restoration, there's no need to ever remove the tunnel, drive shaft can be removed, if needed, from below the car. PJ

Paul, I was responding to Chris's comment "Floorboards go on top of the transmission tunnel". thank you for clarifying that the trans tunnel is on top. That makes better sense.

W.a.CHasser. and others. I agree with
paul S Jennings. The drive shaft tunnel is to
go under the floor boards, and the trans cover is on top of the floorboards.
The toeboard /firewall lower flange has 2 captive nuts on the underside and the floorboard goes on top of the flange

Bill: You probably confused me wit the terms. The tunnel goes under and the trans cover goes over. The little gap between the two is actually covered by the carpet. When you glue it down just make sure the end extends about 1/2 beyond the edge of where the transmission cover sits. There is a little bump there.
