MG TD TF 1500 - TD tub assembly, two questions

OK guys I’ve hit a point in this tub rebuild where I have a couple of questions.
First question; what’s up with the rear fender/rear spring shackle interference problem I’m having. The fenders were not installed on the car when I got it and maybe now I kinda know why. The inside edge of the fenders hit the spring shackles before they seat themselves into the wheel-well openings of the tub. It looks like someone has tried to use a hammer to get them to fit by folding the outer lip under. With very limited success.
Am I missing something here?
The hotrodder in me says to just cut- fold in- and re-weld; but I wanted a little feedback before I go this route as to how it was done originally.
Thanks
Hiram

My second question is about the long nails I found that extended through the lower door area of the front quarter panel sheet-metal, through the under door rail, and down into the main body rail (see pictures with finger pointing to nails along top of under door rail). Im thinking this was done, some time in the past, as an attempt to stabilize the lower door areas after the under door rail/latch and hinge pillar joint had failed.
Is this the case or were these nails original? If they are non-original then Ill disregard the nails, weld up all the holes in the door threshold, and continue with my tub assembly.
The other picture is just a progress picture test fitting the louvered bonnet top and TC headlight brackets I got off ebay, for those who are interested.
Thanks again.

your rear shackles need to be "flipped over" - toward the front?
BRIAN WARMUTH

Wow your right, I should have seen that! I guess you look at something so long you miss the obvious.
Thanks Brian

Looks like somebody straightened out the relief in the rear of the fenders also. As for the nails..looks like a spot where somebody used nails instead of screws for the threshold plates to me.

LaVerne

I think LaVerne hit that nail on the head- perfect spacing for threshold plate holes. Remember there is a spacer between the frame extension and the rear fender- a thick washer or sometimes two is about right. You want the fender line and gap to be straight and parallel with the edge of the gas tank. George

Here is a photo showing the relief in the fender partly assembled. I also think yours has been straightened out. Without it, the fender will still hit the shackle/spring.

I would agree about the threshold plate except, like I said the nails went completely through the under door rail and deep into the bottom main rail. They were actually holding the under door and main rails together. I had to cut the nails to get them apart. There was no threshold plat inside the door, just the visible nail heads. Strainge! Wish I had stopped to take a picture of it together.
But anyway, I'm right in that no nails were used origionally to hold the under door rail to the main rail, correct?

As to the rear fender, is it just hammered in? Seems a rather crude way of fitment(lol).

There are a bunch of rear wing pictures on my website. Remember, the relief pounded into the rear wing is to clear the rear valance panel, not the spring shackles. We turned two aluminum spacers for my rear wings, one wider than the other, to help ease the fit.

I can't figure out how one would fit the rear wings without the tub in place. I mean, the tub defines the location of the wings, not the chassis.

Hello Dave
The tub is in place on the frame, just not shown in the pictures. First I need to get the shackles turned the right way around and then see what it looks like. Again this is just another test fit prior to sealing all the wood and putting it all together with bolts and screws.

Does that look like the original ivory paint? Looks a bit yellow, but I know photos can lie.... always nice to have a sample of an original colour?
gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

Hello Gordon
Not really sure if that is original paint or not. But I'll tale a picture of the fender in natural sunlight this comming weekend so I'll have a copy hopefully with beter color just in case it is.
Hiram Kelley

Are you repainting it ivory
gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

Actually I was thinking of something like, I believe it was Dave Jorgensen's, black over BRG in a style like a pre-war NA/NB. I really like that pre-war look but can't afford the real thing (lol). That's why I'm going with the shorter TC headlight brackets, cycle fenders, and a redesigned front splash apron that will be louvered to match the bonnet and hide the oil cooler. At least that's the plan.
