MG TD TF 1500 - TD underdash panels
Hi Everyone, I am in the process of making a set of underdash panels for my 51TD from a paper pattern sent to me by a friend. What I am not clear about is how the panels fit to the dash. Do they screw directly to the plywood dash backpanel and follow its contour up and over the steering column? Or is there another way. Any info including brackets and where they attach would be gratefully received. David Tinker Wales UK |

Just screws to the plywood dash backing. Up and over the steering column. I assume you have the cutouts for the steering support and the hole for the clock adjustment plus the front edge is dished out where it goes over the steering column. Chris |

There were some metal brackets on the one I took out of another car. There were correspoding screw holes in the bottom of my car's dash indicating it had brackets too. Blake |

On the example I have, it has two brackets by the dash glove box, and another for the other side between the steering wheel and tub, there is two further brackets on the side by the join from scuttle to tub. The latter are right angle, front ones flat and they mount to the bottom edge of the inner dash. Tatty ( Non-member since 2003 ) |

David, I have an Under-dash Shield from Abingdon Spares that I haven't yet installed. I copied the instructions, etc. onto a webpage. You might want to look at http://www.home.earthlink.net/~budkrueger/TDstuff.html and click on the Under-dash link. Hope it helps. |

Bud and David, Can anyone email me or post a copy of the dimensions? This sounds like a straightforward woodworking project. Ira |

There are wooden battons that go across the back of the panel board and three metal brackets that secure the panel under the dash. Check the Moss catalogue they have a kit which include the parts and vinyl, all except the panel board. They suggest 3 or 4mm plywood or fiberboard. Geoff |

Thanks Everyone for the info. I was under the impression that the panel came in 2 pieces and joined at the centre. Buds webpage has set the record straight. David Tinker. Wales UK |

David - While the original under dash shield was one piece, you might want to consider making on that is two or more pieces. I made mine in about 3 or 4 pieces (we are traveling right now, so I can't check which it is). I just cut it where it seemed logical to have access and then made a light framework out of 3/8" wood to screw it all together. when I want access to the area under the dash, I can just remove a piece of the shield where I want to gain access (it also makes the shield much easier to install). Good luck - Dave |

Under dash Shields? What shields? Over the years I've owned 2 TDs, a TF and an MGA. None of them had underdash shields. Never knew they had any. Just seemed logical to me that I had easy access for the frequent trips into the guts of the dash... Thanks for setting me straight. Guess I'll give Abingdon a call Walt 51 TD PS Bud: Nice Website! |
