MG TD TF 1500 - TD vin information

I put in a request for data on a TD and this came back.

Anybody know what the CH/ONLY means?

Chassis only? Doesn't make sense ...but first thing that popped into my brain.
David Sheward

My guess is Chassis Only. Perhaps it was one of the cars that went to Germany and had the body made there. Those cars were mentioned in Malcolm Greene's book on T Series restoration. They had Bosch electrics and the bodies were not quite the same.
Max Irvine

maybe it goes make sense!
David Sheward

Guess I'll dig the restoration book out and have a look. Fellow on another board had the number and a couple of pictures of the car. Typical barn deal. He wanted to know the year so I plugged the number into the T site gives you the build date and I was puzzled about that note.
L E D LaVerne

The german bodied TD's are referenced on pages 15 and 16 of Malcolm Green's book. If this is one of those cars it would be very rare.
Max Irvine

This has a nice article on these cars

Thanks Chris. The description certainly matches what we have here.

L E D LaVerne

I asked the fellow if he could go back and take some more pictures.

L E D LaVerne

I told him I would hook him up with you if he can. Thought it might be a good addition to the Original TD site.

L E D LaVerne

I would say it is chassis only. There were a few running chassis sold that way. The Arnolt MG is one example that comes to mind. The question is, why would a chassis only have a TD body on it? The German MG is the only thing that makes sense. I'd love to see that car.

Ah, Ha! I do not see a crease in the rear fenders of that car, that would make sense for a German Bodied car! We might have stumbled upon a rare MG here.

What a find, more pics! More info! I'd love to hear the known story and see pictures of the builders plate and the rest of the car.

L E D Thanks. I also asked the German MG site for permission to republish the article with pictures.

I have spot all ready for this in the variants page :-)
Chris Couper

I spoke with the fella that took the pictures just now on the phone. I'll pass on any info we have and I have begged him to take more photos and try and pry any history on the car. In the mean time perhaps somebody could look the vin up and see if it was ever registered with the New England T register.
L E D LaVerne

Hmm ... I need to go back through some issues of The Sacred Octagon - I recall that they had an article in one issue about the German TD's and detailed the differences between them and the Abingdon cars.

One of the differences is apparent in the car above - the louvers on the side of the bonnet are all the same length - on the factory TD's they are shorter where the rear latch is attached.

8873 is one of five chassis-only cars made the same day, all in EXL format, 8871-5. Although not marked, most of these went to single builders, such as the German makers.

This certainly is a very rare MG !
An article about the German built MG TD "replicas" appeared in the Dutch magazine "British Car" on page 50 of the January 1998 issue. However they claimed these were built by the "Zeppelin" garage GmbH ,Heilbronnerstrasse 43 of Stuttgart...( No mention of Hennefahrt). The one depicted in the magazine has chassis number TD9240 which is a July 1951 car according to the MG Car Club files and has the addition "EXL" ....
At the time of writing at least two of these replicas were in the Netherlands.
Cheers,

A "Zeppelin" garage MG TD..
The badge below the windscreen stanchion gives the name and address of said garage.

It has the bonnet louvers and latches of the German cars. Bud

Nick, again the car about which you write, 9240, is one of 5 EXL chassis-only cars sequentially numbered 9237-9241, completed between July 20 and 26, 1951.

A magnificent example of these Zeppelin cars is the one I've spotted on www.flickr.com using 'mg td midget 1953 (0040)' as search.

Don't know about copyrights so if you want to see it use the link. I believe the car is in Dutch ownership.

Chris,

The email address should read primavistasign@xs4all.nl

So without the period at the end...
JL Nederhoed TD#3966

Jasper,
Is this the TD you're talking about ?
http://www.dejongklassiekertaxaties.nl/getaxeerde-autos/Cabriolets/mg-td/
It's the one described in the "British Car Magazine".
(Funny that even the taxation man gets it all wrong....;^)

Nick Herwegh

Nick,

No, that isn't the one. On the picture its license plate shows DD-81-55 and according to the RDW-register (let's say the Dutch DMV) this license is valid and started in 1965.

On 2nd thoughts I believe a copy of the pic on this BBS will not harm anybody, and so I'll post it in a minut...
