MG TD TF 1500 - TD Water Outlet Pipe Studded
A search of the extensive archive on the thermostat has shed no light on this component. I recently purchased this item which carries the following stamped part # MOWOG 22523 and another identified with the # 24177. Both components at first glance appear to be identical however the 22523 is more vertical than the 24177; which then offsets the angle of the thermostat end of the top radiator hose to the tank so that the plane of the top hose isn't in line and is kinked. I'm assuming that the more vertical 22523 is from a TC, mainly because of the earlier number. I believe that the 24177 is correct for the TD. I have seen a number of TDs at Concours events here in Sydney with what I now realise is the incorrect Water Outlet Pipe fitted and wondered then about the distorted top hose. The 1950 edition of the M.G. midget Series TD Illustrated List of Service Parts identifies the Water Outlet Pipe Studded as MG 900/7 and the thermostat as A 1208.
In relation to the thermostat itself the TC and TD appear to also be almost identical, except for the shape of the flange on the small bypass elbow. This suggests that the thermostat housing did also differ. If Frank Filangari is still active on this board could you please contact me at pjbm at bigpond dot com as I'd like to use a couple of your pics of the original bellows in an article on the modification I undertook about 6 years ago of an original thermostat housing, for publication the August issue of TTORC. The attached pic of my engine shows the small bypass elbow with the larger flange. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Pic 2. This shows the difference in the outlet pipe angles. The one in the foreground is the earlier more vertical one. Both plates are sitting flat on the table. I'm using a green coloured gasket material called Conafi - you can see some of it at the left of the pic - which is purpose designed for water hi temp and steam applications. This is incredibly expensive; about $700 in sheet form, but small off cuts from the supplier in Sydney are very moderately priced. I also purchased a box of 200 8 x 1 mm fine metric blackened nuts for about $16 from Industrial Fasteners who are also in Sydney. Probably one or two more than I'll need... Cheers

The steeper elbow is for TC. The TD engine sat farther from the radiator, which is why it needs a fan spacer and has the different elbow. It's a roughly 7.5 degree difference. The TD elbow does not work on TC, as it will hit the fan. |

Peter have a look at the NTG website www.mgbits.com where it shows in a photo the difference between a TD and a TD/TC elbows. |

Thanks John. The difference is actually quite marked as both my pic above and the one from NTG show. I have a TB/TC original studded water outlet pipe complete with new nuts to sell or swap if anyone wants one. I'm still looking for the small elbow with the oval shaped flange, as opposed to the diamond shaped one. The latter is from a Y and possibly also from a TB/TC. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
