MG TD TF 1500 - TD water pump
I finally decided to change my dripping water pump and after getting it off and comparing it to my rebuilt one in my inventory I note the one from the car is a six blade impeller pump while my spare pump is a four blade. I tried to punch out the pin that holds the impeller on the shaft to swap impellers but no amount of pounding seemed to budge it. Is the four blade one that substandard? Car always cooled very well with the just removed six blade one. I am tempted to just replace with the four blade one. Is there someone in the business of rebuilding pumps? |

>I tried to punch out the pin that holds the impeller on the shaft to swap impellers but no amount of pounding seemed to budge it. > Some pins are tapered. You must drive them from the small end, which, in truth, is not much smaller than the big end. Check first to see if it is a taper pin. If so you cannot be timid. It will take a good whack with the right hammer to get it to move. Jim B. |

The four blade was original. I believe the 6 is something recent, not sure of the advantage. George |

John, Make sure that you do a "dry fit up" first insure that the pump fits! You might have to do some grinding of the pump body, and enlargement of the holes,, Also, tape a piece of card board to the rad to protect your knuckles when reinstalling the fan blades. SPW |

I am going to replace my worn TD water pump with a new Racemettle replacement. From the comment directly above, am I correct that I can do this without removing the radiator? Earlier posts seem to indicate that it is best to remove the shell and radiator for better access. If it is possible to remove and replace without removal of the radiator, I may try that. |

jeff, Removal of the rad is NOT necessary,,, (not sure about a car with a Seirra 5 speed where the engine had to be moved foward) One more thing,,, some replacement pumps require a one minute or so dry spin to seat the pump seal,,,, if it is necessary, it should be noted in the installation instructions... I might just have to send my old original pump out for a rebuild. I replaced with a MOss unit 3 years ago and at the time I could not find a rebuild service. But..might be worthwhile to get it done now and just have it in stock. |

Here's a recent response from Butch Taras about water pump rebuilding: Hello Bud. My current turn around is about 1-1/2 months. Butch does great work, but you have be patient. Bud |

Hello Bud thanks for the plug. I know everyone thinks 1-1/2 month lead time is excessive. I still work full time and do this in the evenings and weekends. I currently have 7 water pumps, 2 differentials, a set of carbs, 2 pre-war fuel reserve valves, 3 oil pumps, a distributor and 16 tc brake master cylinders to do currently. Butch |

Thanks for the confirmation Steve. I will definitely send my old pump off to Butch for reconditioning as a spare. |
