MG TD TF 1500 - TD1250 progress
Work is progressing slowly but I think my friend made the right choice taking the car back to the original tutone metallic greens. Subtle in some light but a classy look to me.

I remember the debate from a few years ago as to whether there were any two tone cars from the factory. My colors came from paint matching on parts of the car which were not exposed. Looks like there is at least one other out there. I guess I am a little disapointed that mine is not the only one. Not really...... Bill |

I think the factory made a better choice painting the tank a spare rack the same color as the tub on yours Bill. Not sure why they did the opposite on this one. Tank is getting a vinegar flush right now so not in the picture but it is the darker color. I find it interesting that the tubs appear to be the same color but the wings are certainly not.

LaVerne please expand on the “vinegar flush” process. Car is Beautifully done! |

If the fuel tank is just rusty inside, you can put several gallons of vinegar in the tank along with a couple of cups of steel nuts and the seal the tank filler opening with a 1 1/2" dorman expandable plug. Agitage the tank several times a day and keep doing so for about a week. Dump the contents out of the tank and flush the inside throughly with water. I like to use a pressure washer as it speeds the process. Once you have it cleaned out remove all of the plugs and the sending unit (which by the way if in good nick I remove it and seal it with a plastic sandwich bag before reinstalling it for the vinegar soak as I prefer not to have the light acid working on the unit) and then install the blow end of a good shop vac and let it run for several hours to dry all of the moisture from the inside of the tank. At this point if you are going to line the tank (and we are not on this one) then it is ready to be lined as the vinegar will have etched the steel for adheasion. If no lining, fog the inside with some WD40 to prevent flash rusting and the tank should be ready for assembly and mounting. If the tank has a bunch of old stale petrol fuel and goo, dump several gallons of lacquer thinner in the tank and seal it back up and agitate it frequently and give the thinner some time to dulute the crap and dump it out. Repeat as needed...being very careful as the thinner is very flamable. Once you are happy you have most of the goo out of the tank you can give it the vinegar treatment. It does a very good job and I do it now because the radiator shops are no longer allowed to do fuel tanks here. If you use the thinner flush be sure not to get any on the outside of the tank unless you are planning on repainting it. Here's a before and after of the last tank I did which is off of my TR8 and it was very very nasty inside having sit for probably 20 years. |

And the after. I'll try and remember to post some of this tank I'm working on now later.

I see I didn't do a good job with the before photos but there was a good bit of rust scale in the bottom and up the sides as well

here's the stew mix

I pumped a good portion of the vinegar out with an old fuel pump as I had 8 gallons of vinegar in the tank and it was a little awkward for my weenie arms to handle

Blower has been running for about 35 minutes. I'll go check it here in a bit

Why does the owner not want to seal the tank. It seems that this would be the time to do it before the car goes back together. The possibility of it failing a few years from now and having to take the car back apart most certainly wouldn’t be my preference. |

What is the final home destination for the car? |

I think he probably has read about the number of issues with the sealers....including the latest batches that were supposed to be fool proof...but are not. Too late now without another clean job as the inside has a good coating of WD40 I don't know Ed...you would have to ask Mark. I think it will be around here for a spell but it would not surprise me if it makes its way to Denver for the rest of the family to enjoy...it is a family car after all. |
