MG TD TF 1500 - TDs broken for spares
I am not new to British cars or MGs, however last year I purchased my first TD. It was (and still is) a basket case and not complete. I chose not to purchase a running restored car. A few will understand, many (including immediate family) will not. Over that last few months I have become aware of the high prices asked for T series spares. It is my fear that many "project" cars are worth more as parts than as candidates for restoration. I do think it is essential that spares are recycled to aid the restoration of another TD. In fact, I am depending on it. However, is it possible that cars that have survived some 50 years are now being dismantled for parts? Please assure me that I am wrong. Tony Cove |

Hi Tony, Unfortunately it must true that some T Types are being broken up presumably because they are too far gone for economical restoration. In a way bad news for some but good news for others who need a supply of low cost spares. I know someone here in the UK who imports mg spares by the ton, I know because I have had a few bargains. As for project cars being worth more in parts I do not think so, because the majority of enthusiasts would prefer to buy a near complete car. High prices are asked for second hand spares, but what price is obtained is a different story. Do not give up on your TD or you always regret it. David |

Tony, much like giant corporations, an MGTD (F?) probably is worth more broken up than in one piece, especially if it currently a basket case. The prices of the cars is not going up but the prices of parts is (and the cost to assemble them). As a 'restorer' I can tell you that it is much like breaking rocks, the reward better be in the persuit because no one will pay for a lot of broken rocks. Good luck. One of the many Daves'. |

In my opinion an MG is only beond restoration when the chassis has been smashed and can't be repaired. It is sad that someone would break one up for money and destroy an MG forever. |

Here's one that didn't get away: <www.home.earthlink.net/~budkrueger/SSGTD/SSGTD.html> The new owner, courageous young fellow, has already begun the restoration. |
