MG TD TF 1500 - Tear down photos of TD 15470

Does any of this look familiar?

I'm taking major assemblies off as assemblies, because first I have to rebuild the tub, and while that is going on, I will strip the frame and build that up.

Enjoy.

Nice to see another one brought back. I bet those pictures under the dash were fun to take. Overall, looks like a moderatly straight forward restoration. No major cut and patch to the metal body.

Hi Bruce! Thanks for your observations. I always have felt that except for the wood, my car was in really good shape. I'm glad I dislike the black interior, and don't mind replacing it, because overall, the seats and trim were in pretty good shape. My wife wants me to go back to red, in which case I would do red over tan, but right now I'm thinking ivory over green with green wings.

The dash pictures were easy to take once the seats were out of the car (I'm 6'3") I have a Kodak DX3600 2.2 megapixel camera which has an amazing range on the lens! I just turned on the back screen, and shot with the flash when I framed what I wanted! Of course the pictures on the website are only a small portion of what I've shot so far.

Warmly,
dave

Why Dave that looks exactly like what I've got in my garage also (except maybe a little less red). Good luck with the tub restoration, that's the part I'm tackling now. Being so tall do you find it hard to drive the TD? I find the shift lever rests under my right knee and the stock steering wheel is too large, again hitting the knees.

Good luck.

Looks like the same black Amco interior and top I have- installed in the mid-late 70s. Can't wait to get rid of mine either! George
George Butz

Well, My ivory TD had black interior when I got it in 1974 and while not original, I like it (primarily like it because it is still in good condition and I don't want to put out the money for a new interior, top and tonneu and repaint of the grill). If you are getting rid of your black stuff want to part with it, let me know. (cunhab@charter.net)

Isn't it interesting on how we look at one of these and figure it will be an easy/quick restore? Not saying it isn't, but once you start it always amazes me how many more things you find to do.

Roy, you are right, that red is RED! About fitting, I found a long time ago that if I move the steering wheel aft, closer to my chest, my knees clear and the car is much more comfortable. Sounds counter intuitive, but the car is so light that steering effort isn't a problem. We can share tub stories as we go.

George, I always wondered how the black became such a popular color in the 70s. I did have two 75 Spitfires which were red over black.

Bruce, I'm keeping my interior until I finish the car. Then we can negotiate! I was reasonably careful in removing it, and many panels are in good shape, especially the highest quality door pockets I've ever seen on an MG.

Bud, I bookmarked your photo site earlier, and enjoyed your excellent writing, especially how your car "Lazarus" got his name.
