MG TD TF 1500 - Test drive

Set the carb fuel mix to 12 flats (two turns). I think it's a bit rich; and will do more syncing.

Well, today counts as the first real test drive. I got up to 40 round the neighborhood. At stops, the engine purred, no stalling or even hint of it; putting it into gear the little beast just LEAPS forward... I took a corner just a little too quickly and the rear tires squealed happily...

This is going to be a FUN car to drive!!!

Next projects: air filters, finish new HT wiring, check and adjust distributor. Pretty soon it will be time to take it to a real MG mechanic soon for a once-over, in hopes that Ernie will find everything in good condition.

Next big project: remove the canvas top and start rebuilding the canvas.

Time also to christen her: I'm thinking Marge III. (Two other Marge's already in my life - mother in law and sister in law.)

Great news, have lots of fun, next step is a 4.30 rear axle ratio, then you can drive it any where, with out worrying about getting run over. After that a front anti-sway bar from a MGB.
Yes 1 1/4 carbs are standard.
Do you have any rebuild history of the engine?
Len Fanelli

It's never been rebuilt. I don't think the car has had more than 20,000 miles on it.

Geoffrey, I think that you open 6 flats from closed. 12 is to high. I close mine and then go 6 flats.
Tom Maine

Geoffery,

Sounds like Marge lll is already running well. I know we all (most of us) become anal about what is perceived to be the smallest possible defect in appearance or performance. Yes, we mostly have fun and great satisfaction when we are pleased with our corrective measures. Never the less do not put off those great drives to spend too much time tinkering. With 20,000 miles she is ready for many more miles of smiles. AgainÉ

Good luck,

Sounding good, Geoff. You're on your way. Len's talk about the 4.3 rear end is something that you'll want to think about when you start doing some real driving. And, the best source for that sort of thing is rigth in your back yard, Dave Clark. Here's a bit about his products http://www.ttalk.info/ClarkConversion.html Bud

Geoffrey, looks good. Is that a moss motors chain on the front bumper?
Lots in the archives about doing the 4.3 conversion yourself as well.
Best of luck with the top cloth. Regards, Tom

Tom, it's not a Moss reproduction chain... That's an original period chain, standard MG sizing... Its two Imperial cubits long and made with 133 5/8 links - Whitworth of purse. It's not for security... It's just to keep Marge III from running off...

Haha..very good! Regards, Tom

I'm also thinking - for a name that is - of Lily Christine IV. Any fans of Gervase Fen out there?
