MG TD TF 1500 - TF Backfire
Small mystery. Took "Boadicea" (1954 TF 1250) for a run on nice clear day today, after a few weeks laid up in the bad weather. She was running very happily when we tackled a hill - about 1 in 6 - nothing ridiculous. She seemed to be pulling well in 3rd gear about 2750 rpm on nearly full throttle, when suddenly she lost power and backfired, then nearly stalled. Rapid double declutch into 2nd and she pulled away with no further trouble. She always runs a little rich, but runs quite cool (about 70 to 85 degrees on the guage) and timing (static TDC) seems OK. Complete new ignition electrics installed last season, including new coil. Any suggestions please? Or was it a bit rough on her to make her pull hard at relatively low revs like that? BTW we now run on 95 octane unleaded dosed with the Phosphide / cyclopentadienyl lead substitute and octane booster from Castrol. No apparent trouble with that for over 1000 miles now. Thank you. |

You were running too rich and at too low RPM for the conditions. One cough and you were in trouble and had to increase revs above 3000 to get back. |
