MG TD TF 1500 - TF Bulkhead Fasteners

What was the original shank diameter, head diameter, and head type of fasteners that attach the TF bulkhead to the tub? Will you please use the attached diagram to answer the location and sizes?

(TFs used carriage bolts in exposed locations. TDs used hex head bolts.)

Here are the bolts that were in my TF7211 bulkhead. I don't know which are original and which were replaced during previous restorations. I didn't record the types and locations of bolts that I removed during disassembly.

> 5/16 BSF carriage bolts with 0.727" diameter head along the top. "A" in the diagram.

> The same 5/16" carriage bolts may have been in "B" in the diagram. Possible in other locations(?)

> 1/4 BSF carriage bolts with 0.595" diameter head somewhere along the sides.

> Plus, of course, a few 1/4-20 SAE carriage bolts somewhere along the sides.

> 1/4 BSF hex head bolts toward the bottom of the sides.

Since BSF carriage bolts aren't readily available, I'll use Frank Cronin's advice and look for new carriage bolts that have the approximate head diameter as the originals - - regardless of shank diameter.

Lonnie: Sorry I don't have the dimensions for you but two of the A's are longer than the other to accommodate the steering wheel column brace.

Regardless of size, do you know if all of the bolts were the same size?

Forget my comment about the longer A bolts as I forgot TFs used a different bracket.

If you look at picture #114 they sure look to be the same size. Rod would know for sure.

Lonnie,

The bolts securing the Bulkhead flange on TFs are not the same size.

The 'A' bolts in your diagram are 1/4" BSF carriage bolts.

However,'B' and 'C' are a larger diameter, 5/16" BSF.
Now these two(2) bolts are not the same length.
The TOP,'B' bolt is shorter in shank length compared to the 'C' bolt (the shorter TOP bolt is only 2 and 3/8 inches in shank length(measured from under the head). This is necessary to cater for the tapered wood wedge piece which bears on the upper chassis cross member brackets which in turn affix the Bulkhead to the chassis strengthening cross over bar.

The other bolts depicted are 1/4" BSF bolts.

Rob -

THANKS. That’s exactly what I needed.

The positions of those bolts in my TF were totally switched around. I’ll drill holes for replacement bolts in new wood this week.

Thanks again for your continuing help and advice on my TF restoration.

Sounds like a good time for someone to add a colume to the TD fastener list to cover the TF
