MG TD TF 1500 - TF Distributor cam - 2nd opinion

Gentleman;

I'm about ready to install an electronic ignition (from Moss Motors)in my 1954 MG-TF. Chassis # HDE43/7048, Motor # XPEG 832.

I have a positive ground vehicle and don't want to make a mistake ordering a unit for an incorrect distributor cam. I 'believe' I have a 'symmetric' -type. Photo is attached. My uncertainty comes from the fact that I think this is a somewaht 'later' TF (17 Sep 54 manufacturing date) but the engine is an 'earlier' manufacture series? I have verified that the chassis and engine are correct for this vehicle.

I don't want to make a $150 mistake - so your opinion and comments are solicited and appreciated!

THANKS!!

You should be OK, Late TD's and all TF'S Had the same distributor cam.
But to be sure and protect yourself from the DPO, CHECK THE DISTRIBUTOR.
It should be D2A 40387A or up to H
I thought this was the High Lift Cam, I think symmetric and high lift use the same Pertonics magnet assembly.

From the condition of the screw in the center, this distributor has been neglected and quite likely suffers from wear or seizure if the advance mechanism. Do yourself a favour and send it to Advanced Distributors or somebody else who knows what they are doing. They will no doubt know which pertronix to use, and can fit it as part of the repair - possibly for less total $$.

Don,

TFs had the Lucas Distributor No.40367 not
40387.

The position of the notch in relation to the lobe would suggest a "high lift" cam . Cheers Phil

Rob,

Thanks, my typo while I had the distributor in hand so I could get the numbers right.

An aside, I recently was given a distributor #DKY4A 40162F.
Does anyone know what car this was used in?

Hi Don,

I am not 100% sure of my facts on this one, however I suspect that DKY4A 40162 was a replacement for the original TC distributor
DKY4A 40048.?

Hope this helps.

See http://www.ttalk.info/Tech/Advance_curves.htm It groups the 40162 and 40048 together. Bud

To add a little to this conversation, I was having trouble with my TF-1500 running rough at about 3300 to 3500 rpms. I suspected a distributor problem which seemed to be getting worse. Finally decided to send the distributor off to Jeff at Advanced Distributors to see if he could solve the problem. A couple of days after putting it in the mail, I got a phone call from Jeff and he said "we gotta talk". Not the kinda thing you want to hear. Anyway, he checked it all out and discovered that the distributor had been rebuilt before and there just was not enough left for him to do anything with. We talked a bit more and he asked me how I used the car. Then he said that he had an idea and explained that he would like to try to set up a 45D for me. I told him "go for it". He sent back to me a virtually brand new 45D with a Pertronix ignitor fitted to it and I installed it and dialed it in and that car has never run so good for me. Couldn't be more pleased. Apparently the drive shaft bearing was so worn that it had developed an "out of round condition" and was beyond normal repair so that at the higher revs it would wobble and the rotor would not make proper contact with the spark plug leads in the distributor cap, chewing into some and not contacting the opposite.

This is a far longer post than I had intended but the point is that Jeff is the man.
