MG TD TF 1500 - TF floorboard details
Hi and Happy New Year to all readers ! Trying to correct PO's work on floorboards can anyone tell me the 'correct' location of the seat fastening holes ? - plenty of info. on TD's but TF seats are different ! As most will know the support metal for the floorboards was not level and packing was used at the factory to correct this. Page 24 of Malcolm Green's book has a photo of the rear of an early TD chassis and shows felt strip was used under the prop shaft tunnel to even out the higher ledge of the heel board. The small but thicker strip at the rear appears to be around 6" long with the thinner long strip starting a couple of inches away at the next hole. The tunnel then goes on with the floorboard on top of it. So far so good but the TF Parts Book refers to 8 waterproof board packing pieces which at some time in the TD-F production presumably replaced the felt which would have soaked up water and led to rot and rust. Allowing 4 pieces (as above) for the propshaft tunnel, 2 for the inner rails at the rear of the transmission and 2 for the outer sides, this would appear to tie up with the 8 figure, as well as going some way to levelling up the floorboard. I've gone for rubber strip as packing although the Archives show people using house draught excluder but which I feel could still trap water according to type used. Don't forget the 2 rubber draught excluder pads round the base of the roll bar and the rubber pad over the pedal box all of these under the boards. 'Dum-Dum' type non -setting putty can be used on the remaining locations as required. As most people know 4 csk. No.8, 1 1/4" woodscrews were used on each outer side of the frame to fasten down the floorboards - the Malcom Green book suggests these were zinc plated Phillips - I don't know - any views out there ? I think these were done freehand by the factory operative but with guide measurements. As far as I can tell the rear screw was approx. 5" from the heelboard, then 10", another 10", and finally 7" for the front screw. Clearly if I am right the holes varied slightly from side to side, on original cars, an interesting 'dilemma' for the restorer ! The 1/4" BSF machine screw that goes through the floorboard to the captive nut at the rear of the top of the pedal box (on RH drive cars) is never referred to but must be csk. since the rotating master cylinder access cover has to slide over it. Incidentaly on RH drive cars there is no need to hacksaw part of the rubber fume excluder and retaining plate if it is remembered that the transmission cover goes over and compresses both items. The above are only my current thoughts on this subject - if anyone has any further info. this would be welcomed. Cheers John. |

Hi - when locating the rear outer woodscrew you may need to go a bit over 5" from the heel board to avoid bottoming out on one of the horizontal running board bolts. There are no potential clashes with any of the other woodscrews. Cheers John. |
